Women's Lacrosse Comes up Short in NCAA Tourney Opener

YORK, PA – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team established an early lead, but could not fight off a precise offensive attack from No. 10 Washington & Lee, as the Cavaliers suffered a 27-7 loss to the Generals in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Today's loss closed the careers of Cabrini's seven seniors, Emily Crouse, Liz Hoeffner, Sara Johnsen, Gabby Lee, Megan McLoughlin, Jackie Neary and Alex Petrongolo.

As a group, these ladies led the Blue and White to 56 career wins, including four consecutive CSAC titles and four NCAA Tournament appearances.

Freshman Taylor Dimmerling put the Cavaliers ahead in the opening minute of today's game, before the Generals evened the score three minutes later.

Dimmerling netted her second goal of the day 35 seconds later, followed by an unassisted tally by junior Avery Murphy gave Cabrini a 3-1 lead with 22:39 left in the half.

W&L gained control of the action over the next five minutes, netting five unanswered goals.  Hoeffner briefly stopped the scoring run with her program-record 92nd goal of the season.

Both teams alternated goals before the Generals recorded six consecutive goals to build a 13-5 lead with just south of three minutes left until the half.

Despite junior Emma Rodner-Tims' second goal of the opening stanza, the Blue and White face a 14-6 deficit at the break.

Neary pulled Cabrini to within 14-7 early in the second half, but the Cavaliers struggled to build any sustained offense in the second half, as the Generals outshot Cabrini 19-4.

Dimmerling and Rodner-Tims' finished the day with two goals each, while Murphy added five draw controls and three ground balls. Neary added five caused turnovers, three draw controls and three ground balls to her goal.

Sophomore Lauren Hughes also corralled three ground balls, while junior Katie Kucia caused a pair of turnovers. Junior goaltender Devon Scharf notched six saves and three ground balls.

Cordelia Peters paired five goals and two assists for the Generals (16-4), while Claire Fulton and Alex Meyer posted six points each. With today's win, W&L advances to Sunday's second round, where it will face No. 8 York (13-4).
