ASTON, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team is clicking on all cylinders following a dominant 89-68 win over rival Neumann University on Saturday afternoon.
The offense, which struggled to find a rhythm early in the season, recorded their third consecutive game scoring at least 84 points and featured five Cavaliers in double figures.Â
Junior
Meghan Matthews led the charge with a team and season high 22 points, as well as eight rebounds and four assists in just 25 minutes of action. Sophomore
Ashley Tutzauer was right behind with 21 points, including five rebounds, five assists and five steals.Â
Classmate
Kate Lannon paired 19 points and 10 rebounds for her second double double of the year, while senior
Nomi Washington and sophomore
Lexi Edwards rounded out the Cavs in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Sophomore
Caitlin King continued to be an effective distributor as she tallied a game high six assists.Â
As has been the case during the Cavaliers' four game win streak, the offense got off to a blazing start as they opened the game on a 10-to-2 run, highlighted by a pair of triples from Washington and Edwards.
The Knights responded with a 7-to-2 run of their own to pull back to within three points with 5:32 left in the first, but a pair of free throws from senior
Gaby Jones, followed by back-to-back layups from Tutzauer and Matthews, pushed the Cabrini lead back to 18-11. The trio of baskets sparked a 16-to-6 Cavalier run to end the quarter.Â
The strong opening quarter for the Blue and White was key as the Knights inched closer over the second and third quarter, pulling to within seven points just before the end of the third.Â
That is as close as Neumann would come, however thanks to a 14-to-2 run to start the final stanza. In total, the Cavaliers would outscore the Knights 25-13 over the final 10 minutes en route to a comfortable 89-68 victory.Â
Neumann's Nafisa Saunders netted a game high 34 points on 28 shots, including six rebounds and four steals to lead the Knights.Â
Following today's action the Blue and White improve to 10-8 overall and 5-0 in Atlantic East Conference (AEC) play. They will look to run their win streak to five games on Wednesday, January 23rd when they host the conference leading Marymount Saints in a key AEC matchup. Game time is slated for 6pm.Â
