Late Runs Doom Men's Basketball

GALLOWAY, NJ – The Cabrini men's basketball team led 75-69 with just over six minutes to play, but the Cavaliers were outscored 24-6 over the game's final minutes, sending the Blue and White to a 93-81 loss to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn in the consolation game of the Stockton Tip-Off Tournament.

Six Cavaliers (2-3) scored at least seven points, with four recording double figures. Sophomore Voshon Mack led the way with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Keith Blassingale paired 18 points and six assists.

Junior DJ Smith chipped in with 12 points and seven boards, while classmate Justin Gans added 10 points.

The Cavaliers led for much of a first half that featured 22 lead changes. Junior Billy Warren found Smith for a three pointer, pushing Cabrini's lead to 33-23 with just under nine minutes to play in the opening stanza.

The Bulldogs had an answer, as they regained the lead after a 13-0 spurt. Both teams exchanged the lead over the final four minutes of the half, before St. Joseph's-Brooklyn took a 44-42 lead into the halftime break.

The Bulldogs' lead swung between 3-7 points for the opening eight minutes of the second half, but trailing 63-55 at the 12:15 mark, the Cavaliers made their move.

Over the next six minutes, the Blue and White turned to its defense to climb back into the game. Cabrini held the Bulldogs to 2-12 shooting and forced five turnovers, allowing the Cavaliers to go on a 20-6 run.

With six minutes left, Cabrini seemed to hold the game's momentum  and a six point lead.

St. Joseph's-Brooklyn had an answer of its own, responding with a 12-1 spurt that proved to decide the game, as Cabrini's six point cushion turned into a five point deficit over a two minute period.

Another Smith triple pulled the Cavaliers to within 81-79 at the 3:47 mark, but an 8-0 Bulldogs' spurt extended their lead back to 10 points with 70 seconds to play.

After shooting north of .520 from the field in the first half, including connecting on 7-12 from three point range, the Cavaliers shot just .387 with 3-11 from beyond the arc in the second half.

While Cabrini's defensive effort held the Bulldogs to.427 shooting on the day, St. Joseph's-Brooklyn built a 47-36 rebounds and scored 30 second chance points on 20 offensive boards.

Tephane Etheart led the Bulldogs (2-1) with 30 points, 16 rebounds and six steals, while Dimitri Sirakis added 25 points and five steals.

The Cavaliers will look to snap their two game losing streak next Saturday, when they play host to the University of Scranton. Tipoff is slated for 3pm in Nerney Field House.
