Women's Soccer Secures AEC Championship Berth Behind Stellar Defensive Effort

DOVER, DE - The Cabrini women's soccer team punched their ticket to the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Championship this evening following a 2-0 victory over the No. 2 seeded Wesley College Wolverines.

The Cavalier defense turned in their best effort of the season in tonight's semifinal as they not only tallied a shutout, but held the hosting Wolverines without a shot. It's the fewest shots allowed by the Blue and White since October 10th, 2015 when they allowed just one shot against Rosemont College.

Offensively, the Cavs attempted seven shots with five landing on frame, while also finishing with a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Seniors Alex Garces and Marissa Portelli powered the offensive attack with an unassisted goal each, while classmate Katelyn Gilinger recorded a game high two shots.

The Wolverines matched the Blue and White's defensive effort through the first 45 minutes as they kept the Cavs off the scoreboard and held the league's top offense to just two shots.

The Cavaliers wasted little time coming out of the half, however as Garces opened the scoring in the 47th minute with an unassisted strike. Portelli would put the game on ice in the 70th minute thanks to an unassisted tally of her own.

Despite not facing a shot, junior keeper Ashley Tutzauer and the defense earned their 11th shutout of the year and fifth in a row following tonight's final.

Wesley netminder Kiyanna Gill finished with four saves for the Wolverines.

Following tonight's victory, the Cavaliers improve to 14-3-2 overall and tie the program's all time record for wins in a season. They will look to set a new program record when they travel to Scranton, PA to take on No. 1 seeded Marywood University in the AEC Championship. The Cavs handed the Pacers their only conference loss this season following a 2-0 final on October 23rd. Saturday's game time is slated for 4pm.
