2nd Half Spurt Downs Men's Basketball in VA Wesleyan Loss

READING, PA – The Cavaliers scored the first two baskets of the second half to build a 41-40 lead, but Virginia Wesleyan outscored the Blue and White 64-23 over the game's final 19 minutes, as Cabrini suffered a 104-64 loss to the Marlins at the 2019 Crowne Plaza Holiday Tournament at Albright College.

Senior Keith Blassingale led the Cavaliers with 17 points, while sophomore Voshon Mack paired 16 points on 7-10 shooting with 12 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season. Junior Brice Parks added nine points and five rebounds.

VA Wesleyan scored the first nine points of the game and built an 11-point lead midway through the opening stanza. The Cavaliers responded with a 12-0 run, grabbing their first lead at 23-22 on a Blassingale jumper at the 6:24 mark.

The lead swung back and forth over the final minutes a first half that saw 22 lead changes and four ties. The Marlins built a late five point cushion before a Mack lay-up pulled Cabrini to within 40-37 at the half.

The Blue and White shot nearly .577 from the field and committed just eight turnovers in the first half. Defensively, it held the Marlins to .405 shooting, but allowed VA Wesleyan to attempt 11 more field goals in the opening half.

Cabrini regained the lead with back to back lay-ups in the opening minute of the second half, unfortunately for the Cavaliers, it would be their final lead of the day.

VA Wesleyan took control of the game over the next nine minutes, using a 35-6 run to build a 75-47 lead with 10:47 to play.

After putting their hot shooting on display in the first half, the Cavaliers till shot north of .400 after the break, but made just 2-7 for three point range. Cabrini also struggled from the free throw line, shooting just 8-26 from the charity stripe.

Meanwhile, the Marlins found their shooting touch after the break, hitting 22-43 from the floor, including 10-19 from beyond the three point line.    

Six Marlins (9-1) scored between 12-15 points in the win, led by Percy Burt and Corey Pelham, who scored 15 points each, while Burt corralled 12 boards.

The Cavaliers (3-7) will look to rebound on Sunday, as they face the host Lions' (6-5) in the tournament consolation game. Tip is slated for 2pm in Reading, PA.

Albright nearly erased a 10-point deficit with 10 minutes to play, before suffering an 80-76 loss to FDU-Florham. Four Lions combined for 69 of the team's 76 points, with junior Samuel Majekodunmi leading Albright with 32 points and four steals.
