Men's Basketball Season Ends with AEC Tournament Loss at Wesley

DOVER, DE – The Cabrini men's basketball team saw its season come to an end tonight, as the Cavaliers suffered an 87-69 loss at Wesley in the opening round of the 2019 Atlantic East Conference Tournament.

The loss closes the careers of Cabrini's six seniors, Mike Doyle, Anthony Linder-Creo, DeVahnte Mosley, Ivan Robinson, Alsmith Saintilus and Anthony Wright-Downing, a class that led the Cavaliers to 66 wins, including the 2018 Colonial States Athletic Conference title.

Sophomore DJ Smith led the Cavaliers (6-20) with 15 points off the bench, while freshman Voshon Mack paired 14 points and eight rebounds.

Cabrini trailed early, finding itself in a nine point hole just six minutes after the opening whistle. Down 23-16 midway through the opening stanza, the Blue and White made a major move.

Over the next five minutes, the Cavaliers found their footing and corralled the game's momentum with a 17-0 run.  Sophomore Trey Smith's second consecutive three pointer put Cabrini ahead 33-23 with 4:18 left in the half.

Wesley responded with a 9-0 run of its own, pulling to within 35-34 at the half.

The Wolverines regained the lead in the opening minutes of the second half and would not relinquish it.

Wesley pushed its lead back to nine points midway through the stanza, but the Blue and White would not let the home team pull away.

DJ Smith converted a four point play with 7:01 to play, pulling the Cavaliers to within 67-65. Cabrini got the defensive stop it needed on the subsequent possession, but a pair of misses free throws kept Cabrini from evening the score.

Those misses proved to be just what Wesley junior Brian Cameron needed, as the junior exploded for a personal 16-2 run over the next three plus minutes. By the 3:31 mark, the Wolverines sat on a comfortable 83-67 cushion.

Cameron led the Wolverines (13-13) with 48 points on 17-27 shooting and 11 rebounds. The junior's 48 points are tied for the 12th highest scoring output in Division III this season. Senior Tyrone Craven also tallied a double-double with 13 points, 13 rebounds and five assists.

With tonight's win, Wesley advances to Wednesday's semifinal round, where it will face top seeded Gwynedd Mercy. Wednesday's second semifinal will pit second seeded Marywood against third seed Marymount, who topped Immaculata 64-51 in tonight's other first round contest.

Wednesday's winners will meet on Saturday for the Atlantic East championship.
