RADNOR, PA – Cabrini fell behind early and never recovered. The Cavaliers' bid for a 2-0 start to the 2019 season fell short tonight, as the Blue aad White suffered a 20-12 loss to Bates College at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
Senior
Avery Murphy led the Blue and White posting her second consecutive six goal, 12 draw control performance. The senior added an assist, three caused turnovers and three ground balls to her stat line.
Freshman
Dana Carlson added four goals, a helper and four draw controls, while junior
Lauren Hughes paired a goal and two assists.
Sophomore
Sarah McCarron forced three Bates miscues, one more than senior
MaryKate Keenan and freshman
Shea Neary.
Freshman
Sam Hamalak suffered her first collegiate defeat despite posting six saves and four ground balls.
The Bobcats gained control of the game in the early going, netting a pair of goals in the opening three minutes of action. The Cavaliers trailed 3-0 before Carlson put Cabrini on the board with a woman-up goal at the 25:20 mark.
Bates posted seven of the game's next eight goals to build a commanding 10-2 lead at the half. The Bobcats' scoring run was interrupted only by Murphy's unassisted goal with 8:10 left in the first half.
Carlson added a pair of goals in the opening six minutes of the second half, but three more Bates' tallies expanded Cabrini's deficit to 14-4 with just 16 minute left to play.
That's when the Blue and White made its move. Cabrini responded with seven unanswered goals over the next six minutes. Murphy accounted for five of the goals during the comeback, including two women-down and a woman-up goal.
Carlson and sophomore
Taylor Dimmerling also marked the scoring column during the spurt, as the Cavaliers pulled to within 14-11 with 9:52 to play.
Unfortunately, the Cavaliers would get no closer, as the Bobcats turned up their defensive pressure.
After Murphy's free position goal at 9:52, the Cavaliers attempted just one shot on goal, a Hughes free position goal. Over the same span, Bates forced Cabrini into three turnovers and two penalty cards.
Meanwhile, Bates converted on six of its final seven shots to extend its lead.
While both teams recorded 34 shot son the night, the Bobcats forced 10 free position chances, converting seven while the Cavaliers went just 3-5.
Sophomores Kathryn Grennon and Summer Dias and senior Katie Allard scored four goals each for the Bobcats (1-0), while sophomore Margaret Smith paired three goals and three assists. Senior goaltender Eliza Statile collected nine save sin the victory.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Tuesday, when they face Capital University (1-0) in St. Petersburg, FL. Game time is slated for 11am.
