Cavs Fall to Augustana on Day Two of Spring Break Trip

AUBURNDALE, FL - The Cabrini baseball team fell by an 8-4 final against Augustana College on the second day of their spring break trip.

The Cavs struck for four runs through the games first four innings, but a tough Augustana squad used a five run fourth inning to grab the early lead.

Freshman Garrett Laraia tallied a team high two hits, while classmate Brandon Loner, sophomore Mack McKisson, and junior Shaun Stackhouse tallied one RBI each.

Corey Hunt was charged with the loss as the sophomore allowed eight hits and six runs (five earned) in four innings of work. Junior Ivan Varela and rookie Mike Gama combined for five innings of relief and limited the Vikings to four hits and two runs, while striking out five.

After an even first and second inning, the Vikings opened the scoring thanks to a lead off double and an ensuing Cabrini error. Hunt and the Cavs would escape further damage in the third.

Augustana pushed across five runs in the top of the fourth, however, to take a commanding 5-0 lead. The Vikings needed just five hits to produce their five runs, the biggest of which was a two RBI single from utility man Mitchell Owens.

The Blue and White would get four back in the bottom half of the frame, however as senior Tyler Norris led things off. A misplay by the Augustana second baseman allowed Norris to reach base, while junior Chris Santana followed with a single.

Following a walk by sophomore Andrew Corso to load the bases, the Diamond Cavs pushed across their first run thanks to an RBI fielders choice from Stackhouse. The center fielder flashed his speed as he swiped second and forced a rushed throw from the Viking cather that ended with the ball in center field. The wild throw allowed Santana to score easily and cut the Cavs' deficit to 6-2.

A single from Loner followed by a single from McKisson pulled the Blue and White to within two at 6-4.

That's unfortunately as close as the Cavs would come as the Augustana staff held the Cavs to just two hits the rest of the way.

Mike Powers picked up the victory for the Vikings as he tossed seven innings and allowed four runs (three earned), while striking out six.

The Blue and White will have a chance for revenge tomorrow, February 26th, when they take on the Vikings again at 10:30am.
