WINTERHAVEN, FL - The Cabrini baseball team picked up a 7-3 victory this afternoon in a rematch with the Augustana College Vikings.
The Blue and White tied a season high with 15 hits and were led by sophomore
Steven Priest. Priest finished a perfect 4-4 on the day, including a double, with two runs and two RBI singles. Sophomore
Justin Henry tallied three hits and three runs scored, while senior
Tyler Norris also finished with three hits.
The Cabrini offense also received a key hit from junior
Shaun Stackhouse in the bottom half of the fourth inning after connecting for a two run single.
Junior
Kyran Weemaels earned the start for the Cavaliers and tossed 4.2 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs. Sophomore
Drew Swire picked up the victory in relief of Weemaels thanks to 4.1 innings in which he allowed just three hits and one earned, while striking out four.
The Blue and White struck first as they pushed across three runs in the second inning. An RBI single from Priest gave the Cavs a 1-0 lead. A booted grounder by the pitcher off the bat of Stackhouse allowed Henry to double the Cavs lead at 2-0. Junior
Joe Aurite capped the inning with an RBI single.
Augustana would get two back in the fifth thanks to a pair of bases loaded walks, but the Blue and White would respond in the next two innings.
A sacrifice fly from Aurite in the sixth followed by an RBI single from Priest pushed the Cavalier lead back to five at 7-2. A ninth inning homer from the Vikings would trim the Cabrini lead to 7-3 before Swire induced three consecutive fly outs to end the game.
Augustana's Connor Berek was saddled with the loss after allowing five earned on nine hits in four innings of work.
Following today's action the Cavaliers improve to 5-2 overall and will look to stay hot when they next face Rose-Hulman on Thursday, February 28th at 11am.
