RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team secured a 78-58 victory over the No. 3 seeded Stevenson University Mustangs this morning to advance to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) semifinal.
The Cavalier offense, led by senior
Nomi Washington's 24 points, shot an efficient 47 percent from the field, while holding the Mustangs to just 29 percent. Washington added 10 rebounds to pick up the double double, while
Kate Lannon netted 17 points, highlighted by a game high three 3-pointers.
Junior
Meghan Matthews and sophomore
Ashley Tutzauer rounded out the Cavaliers in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Following a close first quarter in which the Blue and White held a slim 19-15 lead, the Cavalier defense clamped down and limited Stevenson to just three made field goals and 17 percent from the field. The offense capitalized as it used an 11-to-4 run to push their lead to 32-21. A triple from Tutzauer with 4:21 left in the half highlighted the run.
Cabrini ballooned their lead to 21 points following a third quarter in which they outscored the Mustangs 28-19. Six different Cavaliers scored in the quarter, led by Washington's 10 points and Lannon's seven points.
The Cabrini defense never allowed Stevenson to find a rhythm as they cruised to the eventual 78-58 final.
The Cavs netted 25 points off turnovers, compared to the Mustangs' 13 points and outscored the Stevenson bench 14-to-5. Stevenson finished the game 1-for-18 from beyond the arc and shot just 56.7 percent from the charity stripe.
Jonyae Curry led the Mustangs' offense with 18 points and added eight rebounds.
Following today's game, the Cavs improve to 18-10 overall and will advance to Saturday's semifinal game where they'll face the No. 4 seeded Grove City College Wolverines.
Quarterfinal No. 2: No. 4 Grove City College vs No. 2 Brooklyn College
The No. 4 seeded Grove City College Wolverines capped their second straight upset following a 64-55 victory over the No. 2 seeded Brooklyn College Bulldogs.
Grove City's Kate Balcom finished with a team high 19 points, highlighted by a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line. Mckenzie Black and Jess Bowen netted 15 points each, while Allison Podkul added 11 points to round out the Wolverines in double figures.
Brooklyn's Taylor George, meanwhile, finished with a game high 20 points on 8-13 from the field. Chanel Jemmott added 14 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Grove City will advance to Saturday's semifinal game where they'll face off with Cabrini University at 3pm.
Quarterfinal No. 3: No. 1 New York University 52, No. 2 Washington & Jefferson College 42
The Violets picked up their quarterfinal victory over the No. 2 seeded Washington and Jefferson Presidents this evening following a 52-42 final.
W&J's Danielle Parker netted a game high 20 points and 14 rebounds to secure the double double, including four three pointers. Alie Seto rounded out the Presidents in double figures with 10 points.
NYU's Janean Cuffee led her squad with 14 points and five assists. The Violets easily won the turnover battle as they forced the Presidents into 19 turnovers, while committing just five themselves.
They will advance to the semifinal tomorrow and face the winner of Misericordia and Widener at 6pm.
Quarterfinal No. 4: No. 1 Misericordia University 78, No. 2 Widener University 64
The No. 1 seeded Misericordia University Cougars will advance to Saturday's semifinal round after a 78-64 victory over the No. 2 seeded Pride.
Widener's Devan Rimmer led all scorers with 17 points, while teammate Erin Phelan added 15 points and six rebounds.
Rachel Carmody and Japriya Carroll paced the Misericordia offense as each tallied 14 points and combined for 15 rebounds. The Cougars held the Widener offense to 31 percent from the field, while shooting an efficient 44 percent themselves.
The No. 1 seeded Cougars will take on fellow No. 1 seed New York University in tomorrow's semifinal matchup.
