Baseball Cruises to Comfortable Victory Over Visiting Hawks

RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini baseball team coasted to a lopsided 20-0 victory this afternoon over the visiting Hilbert College Hawks in the team's home opener.

The Diamond Cavs paired 20 runs with 18 hits, both season highs, to secure their eighth victory of the year.

Sophomore Steven Priest paced the Cavalier offense after finishing 3-4 with a season high five RBI's. Sophomore JD Barrett finished the day 2-3 with three RBI's, while senior Tyler Norris (2-5) and freshman Jonathan Baker (1-1) both drove in two runs a piece.

Freshmen Garrett Laraia and Brandon Loner rounded out the Cavaliers with multi-hit performances as each tallied two hits. In total, five different Cavs finished with at least two hits, while 12 Cavs marked the hit column.

Sophomore Andrew Corso collected his second win of the season after tossing five shutout innings and allowing just three hits and striking out four. Junior Drew Jackson and senior Tyler Ronayne combined for four shutout innings of relief and struck out five.

The Blue and White opened the scoring in the bottom of the first after Barrett, with the bases loaded, hit a slow roller to the pitcher, but beat out the throw to plate Laraia.

Cabrini added to their lead in a big way thanks to a six run second inning. A double down the line from Priest plated Laraia and junior Juan Familia to put Cabrini up 3-0. Barrett followed Priest with another two RBI hit, this one a single up the middle to make it a 5-0 Cavalier lead. A double to right center from junior Henry Peguero ensued and plated the Cavs fifth run of the inning, while chasing Hilbert's starter in the process. Loner welcomed the Hawks reliever with a single to left to cap the big inning at six runs.

The Cavs added three more runs in the third, starting with some small ball from Norris. The veteran roped a single to left and promptly stole second with one away. An ensuing wild pitch allowed the outfielder to move to third when a single from Laraia scored Norris to make it an 8-0 lead for the Cavs.

Following a single from sophomore Mack McKisson to put runners on first and second, Priest pushed the Cavalier lead to double digits thanks to a two RBI single ot right.

Cabrini added one run in the fifth and sixth inning and busted the game open in the seventh following a seven run inning. A pinch hit two RBI double courtesy of freshman Jonathan Baker highlighted the big seventh inning for Cabrini.

Junior Jesse James Murphy capped the Cavs scoring following an eighth inning double to left to push the score to an even 20-0.

Hilbert's Frank Propis picked up the loss after allowing four hits and seven runs in 1.2 innings of work.

Following today's action, the Blue and White improve to 8-3 overall and will look to pick up their ninth win of the season on Wednesday, March 13th, when they host Eastern University in the Battle of Eagle Road. First pitch is slated for 3pm.
