Softball Scores a Pair of Shutout Wins at Catholic

WASHINGTON, DC – The Cabrini softball team rode a pair of dominant pitching performances and a couple of late base hits to score a pair of shutout victories at Catholic University.

Freshman Grace Stairiker and sophomore Casey Scheuren tossed a pair of complete game shutouts, as the Cavaliers topped the Cardinals 1-0 and 2-0 today in Washington, DC, improving to 8-5 on the season.

Game 1
Stairiker kept the Catholic offense off balance in the opener, allowing just five hits with three strike outs over seven innings.

Offensively, the Blue and White did not fare much better. Despite having runners on base in five of the first six innings, the Cavaliers remained scoreless.

That changed in the top of the seventh.  Junior Alexandra Schell opened the frame with a bunt and reached on a Catholic error. The junior advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before reaching third on an infield ground out.

Schell completed her trip around the bases on senior Darien Caputo's two out RBI single. The Cavaliers managed to load the bases after singles by sophomores Jess Redding and Aysiah Cintron, but could not drive another run across the plate.

Stairiker made the solo run stand with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, including a strike out to end the game.

Sophomore Olivia Young joined Caputo with a pair of base knocks in the win.

Game 2
The Blue and White could not carry its late game heroics into the nightcap. The Cavaliers managed just four hits through the first five innings and remained scoreless.

Meanwhile, Scheuren kept Cabrini in the game. The sophomore hurler kept Catholic at bay, surrendering just two hits over the game's seven innings.

The Cavaliers' offense finally broke through in the sixth, when freshman Faith Pitsikoulis opened the inning with a double. Two batters later, fellow rookie Emily Wargo reached on an infield error, scoring freshman Kadirah Williams, who ran for Pitsikoulis.

Scheuren kept the Catholic bats quiet in the bottom of the inning, before Cabrini added an insurance run in the seventh.

With two outs and Cintron on second, Pitsikoulis' single up the middle scored the sophomore, giving the Blue and White a 2-0 lead.

Once again, Scheuren held off the Cardinals, allowing just a two out single in the bottom of the seventh.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday, when they pay a visit to Widener University (8-2). First pitch is slated for 4pm in Chester, PA.
