Baseball Edged by Montclair State In Extra Innings

MONTCLAIR, NJ - The Cabrini baseball team had their nine game win streak snapped this evening following a 9-8 nonconferece loss to the hosting Montclair State Red Hawks.

The Red Hawks needed extra innings to escape the red hot Cavaliers as they pushed across the tying run in the bottom of the ninth and the game winner just an inning later.

Designated hitter Brendan Van Belle paced the offense as the sophomore finished with a game high four hits, while also collecting an RBI and a run scored. Classmate Mack McKisson and junior Chris Santana tallied two hits and an RBI a piece.

Junior Shaun Stackhouse drove in a team best two RBI's and also scored twice. Senior Tyler Norris and junior Joe Aurite rounded out the Diamond Cavs to mark the hit column.

Sophomore Corey Hunt toed the rubber and tossed five innings for the Blue and White. The righty allowed four hits, four runs (three earned), walked five and struck out four. Freshman Mike Gama (.2IP, 0H, 3ER, 4BB, 1K), sophomore Ray Lutick (2.1IP, 2H, 0ER, 2K) and senior Tyler Ronayne (1.2IP, 3H, 2R, 1ER, 1BB, 1K) combined to allow five runs out of the 'pen. Ronayne was ultimately saddled with the loss.

The Cavalier offense struck early against Red Hawks' starter Nicholas Sefick (3.1IP, 6H, 6R, 4ER) as they pushed across four runs on four hits in the second inning, highlighted by an RBI double from Stackhouse.

The hosts would answer, however, as Montclair St. cut their deficit in half in the ensuing frame thanks to an RBI double and sac fly. They would make it a 4-3 Cavalier lead in the third following an RBI single from Daniel Clemente.

The Blue and White extended their lead to 6-3 in the fourth as Van Belle roped a single to left to plate Stackhouse following an error on the left fielder. After loading the bases, freshman Joey Moyer took advantage of a wild pitch as the rookie scored from third to cap the inning.

The hosts would add a run in the bottom of the fourth to again trim their deficit to a pair. Following a clean fifth inning, Montclair State's Peter Cosentino connected for a bases clearing double off Gama to hand his squad their first lead of the game at 7-6.

Cabrini would load the bases in the top of the seventh and eighth with nobody out, but settle for just one run on both occasions as the Red Hawks used the strikeout and double play ball to escape further damage.

As mentioned, the Red Hawks would tack on a run in the bottom of the ninth and 10th to collect the walk off victory.

Following today's game, the Cavs move to 17-5 overall. They will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday, April 3rd when they travel to Wilkes University for a nonconference matchup. First pitch is slated for 3:30pm.
