SCRANTON, PA - In just the program's third year of existence, the Cavalier baseball team claimed the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Atlantic East Conference Tournament following a doubleheader sweep of the Marywood University Pacers this afternoon.
Game One: Cabrini 11, Marywood 2
Despite allowing two runs, Cavalier pitchers dominated as they allowed just one hit en route to a comfortable 11-2 final.
Junior
Andrew Corso and freshman
Mike Gama teamed up to toss the seven inning gem, while Gama earned the victory. The rookie was masterful in four innings of work as he didn't surrender a hit or walk and struck out three. Corso, who earned the start for the Cavs, made just one mistake and the Pacer offense took advantage for their only hit of the game, a two-run homer off the bat of Jake Schuster.
Offensively, the Diamond Cavs were paced by sophomore
Brendan Van Belle who finished his day 2-2, including a double, with two runs scored, three RBI's and three walks.
Sophomore
Mack McKisson tallied the only three hit performance for the Blue and White, highlighted by his third triple of the season. McKisson also drove in two and scored twice to round out his day at the dish. Freshman
Brandon Loner finished 2-5 with three RBI's, while junior
Henry Peguero rounded out the Cavs with multi-hit performances.
Loner opened up the scoring for the Cavs as his single in the top of the first with the bases loaded drove home freshman
Joey Moyer for the game's first run. The Pacers would escape the first inning jam, but Cabrini would quickly put the pressure back on in the top of the second.
Following a leadoff walk by
Steven Priest, junior
Joe Aurite delivered a sac bunt to move the sophomore into scoring position at second base. After a fly out by Moyer, Van Belle delivered his first RBI of the game thanks to a double to right to plate Priest.
An ensuing single by McKisson put runners at the corners with just one away. Senior
Tyler Norris would load the bases following a walk when Loner roped a single through the right side to put the Cavs up 4-0.
Van Belle would push the Cavs lead to 6-0 in the third following a two RBI single up the middle.
As mentioned, the Pacers tallied their only hit of the game in the fourth thanks to a two-run homer from Schuster to trim the Cavs' lead to 6-2.
It would be all Cabrini the rest of the way, however, as the Cavaliers would tack on five more runs in the seventh inning to cruise to the comfortable 11-2 final. A two RBI triple from McKisson highlighted the seventh inning rally for the Blue and White.
Game Two: Cabrini 12, Marywood 5
The nightcap featured more offense between the two teams as the Pacers used 11 hits for five runs, but it proved not enough as the Cavs pushed across 12 runs, backboned by a five run second inning.
Freshman
Garrett Laraia tallied a team high three hits, three runs scored and three stolen bases, while also driving in one. Sophomore's
Brian Protesto and
JD Barrett, along with McKisson, drove in two RBI's each to lead the Blue and White. In total, eight different Cavs marked the hit column.
Junior
Kyran Weemaels toed the rubber in game two and turned in a quality start en route to his fourth victory of the season. The righty tossed six inning of two run ball and scattered seven hits. Senior
Tyler Ronayne and sophomore
Ray Lutick combined for the final three innings.
Similar to game one, the Blue and White got off to a fast start as they struck for five runs in the second inning. A two RBI double to center from Protesto opened the scoring, while RBI singles from Laraia and McKisson capped the crooked frame.
The Pacers trimmed their deficit to 5-1 in the fourth, but the Cavs quickly got the run back, and then some, as they pushed across one in the fifth and two in the sixth to balloon the lead to 8-1.
The two teams would swap runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth as the score move to 9-4 in favor of the Blue and White. Barrett and Loner would hand the Cavs some insurance runs in the top of the ninth as they struck for a two RBI double and RBI single, respectively to push the lead to 12-4.
Marywood would push across one more run in the bottom of the ninth, but Lutick shut the door with a strike out to punctuate the Diamond Cavs emphatic sweep.
As mentioned, following today's slate the Diamond Cavs clinch the conference's No. 1 seed in the upcoming AEC Tournament. They will wait to find out their first round matchup following the conclusion of the regular season.
Cabrini also improves to 27-7 overall and caps their conference record at 11-1 following today's double dip. They will next host Delaware Valley University on Wednesday, April 24th at 3:30pm.
