Diamond Cavs Cap Season as Atlantic East Conference Runner Up

RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini baseball team wrapped up its' 2019 baseball season as the Atlantic East Conference Runner Up after falling to Gwynedd Mercy University in game two of the best-of-three Championship Series by a 10-9 final.

The Cavs were led offensively freshman Brandon Loner who finished the day 2-3 with a run scored and a team high three RBI's. Sophomore Steven Priest collected a team best three hits, while coming around to score twice. Senior Tyler Norris, junior's Henry Peguero and Joe Aurite, as well as sophomore Brendan Van Bell rounded out the Cavs with multiple hits.

Junior Kyran Weemaels earned the start and opened with the game with a pair of scoreless frames, but the Griffins eventually got to the righty as they struck for three runs in the third and five in the fourth to chase him in an 8-8 tie. In total, Weemaels logged 3.2 innings and allowed eight earned, while striking out two.

As mentioned, their was plenty of scoring early as the Blue and White jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Norris ignited the rally with a solo shot to left to break the 0-0 tie, before Priest followed with a double to right center. Peguero would bring home his teammate thanks to a single down the left field line.

A swinging bunt from junior Shaun Stackhouse put runners on first and second, still with nobody out, for Loner. The rookie delivered a single past the first baseman to hand the Cavs a 3-0 advantage. Classmate Garrett Laraia capped the inning with an RBI fielder choice.

The Griffins trimmed the Cavs lead to 4-3 in the ensuing frame thanks to three runs on two hits, highlighted by a two run homer from Ryan Keen.

Momentum swung back in favor of the Cavs in the bottom of the third, however, as they extended their lead to 8-3. Norris and Priest led off the inning with a single and double, respectively, to put the pair in scoring position with nobody out. Following a Stackhouse hit-by-pitch, Loner again delivered, this time a two RBI double to the right centerfield gap to score Priest and Norris.

Aurite doubled down for the Cavs as he followed Loner's two RBI double with one of his own to extend the lead to 8-3. Gwynedd's starter, RJ Boyle, would escape further damage thanks to a groundout and foul pop out to end the inning.

The visiting Griffins would again respond with a big inning as they posted five runs in the top of the fourth to even the score at eight all. Dave Tatoian backboned the rally with a grand slam to left.

Gwynedd would take the lead in the sixth, courtesy of an RBI double from Keen, and extend their lead to 10-8 following a seventh inning homer from TJ Brasier.

The Diamond Cavs mounted a seventh inning rally following a two out double from Aurite. Van Belle singled off the foot of the pitcher to put runners at the corners for Mack McKisson. The sophomore pulled a single through the right side for his first hit of the game, trimming the Griffins' lead to 10-9 in the process. Gwynedd reliever Brian Wildrick ended the threat, however, as he induced a groundout from Norris for the final out of the inning.

The Cavaliers would go down quietly in the eighth and ninth as Gwynedd hung on for the narrow 10-9 victory.

Today's game also closed the careers of senior's Tyler Norris and Tyler Ronayne.
