Diamond Cavs Drop Nonconference Tilt at Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, PA - The Cabrini baseball team fell to the hosting Swarthmore College Garnet in a nonconference matchup this afternoon by an 11-5 final.

Freshman Joey Moyer and sophomore Brendan Van Belle paced the offense as each finished with two hits and an RBI. Sophomore Mack McKisson, senior Tyler Norris and freshman Brandon Loner rounded out the Cavaliers with hits as each tallied one apiece.

Sophomore Corey Hunt suffered his first loss of the season after allowing eight hits and five earned in three innings of work. It also marked just the second appearance all season in which Hunt did not record a strikeout. Classmate Drew Swire, freshman Mike Gama, and junior's Drew Jackson and Ivan Varela combined for the final six innings of work.

Swarthmore's Ryan Warm earned the victory for the Garnet after coming on in relief of starter Oliver Hicks. Warm totaled 4.2 innings and allowed just three hits, while striking out six.

The Garnet jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the second, highlighted by a pair of RBI doubles from Jackson Roberts and Charles Levitt.

The Blue and White would trim the Garnet's lead to 4-3 in the ensuing frame. A sac fly from junior Joe Aurite scored Loner for the Cavs' first run of the game. Van Belle followed with a sharp single to center to plate Moyer, while McKisson capped the inning with an RBI single down the right field line.

That's as close as the Cavs would come, however, as Swarthmore added one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning, and capped their scoring with a three run bottom of the seventh to take a commanding 11-3 lead.

Cabrini pushed across two late runs, both in the eighth inning, for the eventual 11-5 final. An RBI fielders choice from Moyer and a bases loaded hit-by-pitch from sophomore Steven Priest accounted for the pair of RBI's.

Following today's game the Cavaliers move to 31-9 overall. They will turn their attention back to Friday's Atlantic East Conference Championship series againt the No. 2 seeded Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins. Friday's game time is slated for 3:30pm.
