STATEN ISLAND, NY - Despite a late comeback attempt, the Cabrini women's basketball fell to the hosting College of Staten Island Dolphins this evening by a 77-70 final.
Junior
Ashley Tutzauer led the Blue and White with a team high 22 points, while adding five rebounds and four assists. Senior
Meghan Matthews and freshman
Miranda Liebtag rounded out the Cavaliers in double figures with 14 points and 13 points, respectively.
The Cavs started fast after they opened the game on a 6-0 spurt, highlighted by a triple from Tutzauer, but the Dolphins answered with a 10-0 run of their own to take the early 10-6 lead with just over three minutes left in the quarter. An and-one from Matthews followed by a jumper from the shoulder briefly handed the lead back to Cabrini, but a three ball from CSI's Megan McEwan on their ensuing possession kicked off a 6-0 run to end the quarter.
The Dolphins would carry their lead through the three minute mark in the second quarter when another Tutzauer three put the Cavs on top 31-30. McEwan again matched her counterpart with a three of her own to give the hosts a narrow 33-31 advantage heading into the intermission.
After a layup from junior from
Kate Lannon to knot things back up early in the second half, Staten Island seized momentum with a 24-4 run that spanned nearly eight minutes to take the 57-37 lead. CSI limited the Cavalier offense to 1-9 during the stretch, while forcing five turnovers.
The Blue and White would make a late comeback attempt, ultimately trimming their deficit to as little as four points two separate times, but the comeback would prove too little, too late as the Dolphins would eventually hold on for the victory.
Following tonight's game, the Cavs move to 11-5 overall. They will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday, January 22nd when they travel to Marywood University to take on the Pacers. Game time is slated for 6pm.
