RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini men's basketball team extended its current win streak to four games, as it scored an 87-76 win over Neumann today at Nerney Field House.
The win improved the Cavaliers to 7-13 overall and 3-4 in the Atlantic East Conference, good for fourth place in the league standings.
Five Cavaliers scored north of nine point in the win, led by junior
Justin Gans, who paired 22 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Classmate
Brice Parks added a career high 21 points and nine rebounds.
Senior
Keith Blassingale paired 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while junior
DJ Smith and freshman
Jordan Brown combined for 19 points.
Neumann scored the first five points of the game, but the scored stayed within one possession throughout a first half the included eight ties and 12 lead changes.
Despite the Knights shooting nearly .500 from the floor in the first half and 5-7 from three point range in the first half, the Cavaliers trailed just 40-38 after the tightly contested opening 20 minutes.
The Blue and White opened the second half with a 10-1 spurt, converting five consecutive lay-ups to take a 48-41 lead.
The visitors responded with a 9-0 run of their own to regain control of the scoreboard at 50-48.
Both teams exchanged the lead four times over the next three plus minutes before a three pointer by Waheem Lowman put Neumann ahead at the 12:23 mark. It proved to be the Knights' last lead, as an offensive rebound by junior
Ryan Byars led to a Blassinagle triple on teh ensuing possession.
Blassingale's bucket sparked Cabrini on a 11-0 run. The Cavaliers held Neumann scoreless for more than five minutes before Brown's lay-up pushed Cabrini's lead to 69-60 with 7:16 to play.
The Knights' looked to mount a late rally, pulling to within 78-74 with 2:42 to play, but a Gans three point play pushed the lead back to a comfortable seven points with 102 seconds remaining.
In their previous meeting on Jan. 8, the Cavaliers shot just .212 in the second half, as their five point halftime cushion slipped away.
The Blue and White had no such second half issues today, as the club shot .459 in today's second half and committed to just five second half turnovers.
Cabrini also controlled the paint in today's win, outscoring the Knights 40-24 in the lane, while building a 43-37 rebound advantage. The Cavaliers also recorded 27 fast break points to just 11 for the visitors.
Junior Nassir Cassel led Neumann (8-12, 2-5 Atlantic East) with 19 points, while freshman Jordyn Kendrick added 14 points off the bench. Sophomore Justin Smith earned game high honors with 12 rebounds.
The Cavaliers will hit the road for a pair of tough games this week, as they will visit the top two teams in the conference standings.
Cabrini will head south to Alexandria, VA on Wednesday, where it will face Marymount (11-8, 4-2 Atlantic East), before visiting Gwynedd Mercy (14-5, 5-1 Atlantic East) on Saturday.
