Men's Basketball Falls Short in Upset Bid

DOVER, DE – The Cavaliers' bid to upset Wesley fell short tonight, as the Cabrini men's basketball team suffered an 87-77 loss in its final regular season road game.

The loss dropped the Blue and White to 8-16 overall and 4-7 in the Atlantic East Conference.  The defeat also adds more importance to Saturday's regular season finale against Immaculata (9-15, 4-7 Atlantic East).

A Cabrini victory would clinch the number four seed in next week's conference tournament and a home game against the Mighty Macs in Monday's first round. A loss could drop the Cavaliers to the number five spot and send Cabrini to Immaculata on Monday.

Four Cavaliers scored in double figures tonight, led by senior Keith Blassingale with 18 points. Sophomore Voshon Mack added 16 points, while junior Justin Gans added 14 points, one more than classmate Brice Parks.

Despite surrendering the game's first seven points, the Cavaliers never allowed the Wolverines to pull away. Cabrini clawed back into the game, pulling to within 12-10 at the 12:24 mark.

The score remained within a handful of points throughout much of a first half that included 12 ties and eight lead changes.

Cabrini shot south of .390 from the field in the first half, including 5-16 from three point range, and 7-13 from the free throw line, but trailed just 42-36 at the half.

Wesley immediately pushed its lead to 10 points in the opening minute of the second half, but the Cavaliers would not go away. The Wolverines' lead swung between 5-8 points for most of the second half.

A Blassingale lay-up pulled Cabrini to within 66-62 with 7:44 to play, but Wesley responded with an 8-0 spurt over the next minute, extending its lead to 74-62. That run proved to be a difference in the outcome, as the Cabrini defense held Wesley to just two made field goals over the game's final 6:43.

While the Cavaliers connected on 6-11 during the same time frame, the Wolverines maintained their lead on the strength of shooting 9-9 from the free throw line over the game's final five minutes.

While the Cavaliers' defensive effort held Wesley to just .366 shooting and 4-29 from three point range, both among its poorest performances of the season, the Wolverines managed to take advantage of the Cavaliers' miscues.

Cabrini struggled to keep Wesley off the offensive glass tonight, as the home side converted 20 offensive rebounds into 26 points. The Wolverines also turned 21 Blue and White turnovers into 27 points.

Senior Brian Cameron led the Wolverines (16-8, 10-1 Atlantic East) with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Terrance Braxton paired 14 points and 14 boards.

The Cavaliers will celebrate Blassingale and classmate Jarren Abad prior to Saturday's match-up against Immacuata.  The game is slated to tip off at 3pm at Nerney Field House.
