WINTER HAVEN, FL - The Cabrini baseball team opened their spring break trip with a doubleheader split as they topped Augustana College by way of a 3-1 final in game one, but fell in game two to Alma College following a 15-5 decision.
Game One: Cabrini 3, Augustana 1
The Blue and White received a dominant pitching performance from starter
Jonathan Baker en route to his first victory of the season. The sophomore tossed six innings of one run ball and scattered seven hits in the precess. Juniors
Drew Swire and
Billy Swanstrom combined for the final nine outs with Swanstrom earning the save. The pair combined to allow just one hit, while striking out three.
Offensively, the Blue and White were paced by sophomore
Brandon Loner's two hits and an RBI. Classmate
Brendan Van Belle and senior
Shaun Stackhouse delivered the Cavaliers' other two RBI's, while junior
Brian Protesto and sophomore
Garrett Laraia tallied two hits apiece.
After a clean opening two frames from both pitchers, the Vikings pushed across the game's first run courtesy of a fielders choice from Jake Huber.
The Cavs responded in their half of the inning, however as Stackhouse ignited the rally after being hit by a pitch. The speedy right fielder promptly swiped second to put himself in scoring position. A single to left from Van Belle plated Stackhouse to even the score at 1-1.
The Blue and White would go on to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth off an RBI single from Loner and a sacrifice fly from Stackhouse.
As mentioned, Swire and Swanstrom would combine for the final three innings and preserve the win for the Cavs.
Game Two: Alma 15, Cabrini 5
The end cap of the double header featured a combined 20 runs, but ended with the Diamond Cavs first loss of the season.
Freshman
Christian Strickland tallied a game high three hits for the Blue and White, while also coming around to score. Van Belle, as well as junior
Mack McKisson and rookie
Shane Chavez-Zottnick tallied a hit and an RBI, while Stackhouse scored a pair of runs and stole a pair of bases.
The Scots found early success against senior
Kyran Weemaels as they pushed across three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. The visitors added two runs in the fourth and eventually chased Weemaels midway through the fifth, giving way to sophomore
Joseph Gallo in relief.
Cabrini would tack on runs in the seventh and ninth innings courtesy of a bases loaded walk from junior
Steven Priest and an RBI single off the bat of Chaves-Zottnick.
Following today's games, the Cavs move to 2-1 overall. They will look to get back in the win column tomorrow morning when they play host to Franklin College for a double dip beginning at 10am.
