RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini baseball team battled and put up 11 runs against the No. 8 ranked Kean University Cougars on Wednesday afternoon, but ultimately fell by a 14-11 final.
The Blue and White were led offensively by seniors
Shaun Stackhouse and
Joe Aurite. The pair drove in three runs each, while Stackhouse tallied three hits and two runs scored. His two runs put him at 100 career runs scored, making him the first player in program history to reach the milestone.
Junior
Brendan Van Belle added three hits, including a double, and two RBI's, while six other Cavaliers marked the hit column.
Freshman
Matthew Esquijerosa toed the rubber against the Panthers and was saddled with the loss after allowing seven runs in 1.2 innings. Junior
Billy Swanstrom would follow in relief and turn in 3.1 quality innings, allowing just two hits and one run.
The Cavs answered their counterpart's offensive outburst with one of their own as they struck for five runs in the bottom of the second to trim their deficit to two runs. Following a leadoff walk from freshman
Christian Strickland and a single to right from sophomore
Brandon Loner, Cougars' starter Tyler Hopman plunked three consecutive batters for the Cavs' first two runs. A pair of RBI fielder's choice from Stackhouse and junior
Mack McKisson made it a 7-4 deficit before Van Belle delivered an RBI single to right for the Cavs fifth run.
A solo homer from Zachary Marzano in the fourth pushed the Cougars lead to 8-5, but Aurite answered with a sac fly in the bottom half of the frame to keep the Cavs deficit at two runs.
The Kean offense continued to do damage in the sixth and seventh, however as they tallied six runs off junior
Mike Valerio in relief of Swanstrom.
The Cavs continued to fight despite their eight run deficit as they stuck for three run bottom of the seventh and two run bottom of the ninth, highlighted by a two RBI single from Stackhouse. The rally would prove too little, too late, however as the No. 8 ranked cougars would escape with the aforementioned 14-11 victory.
Kean's Justin Hernandez collected the win after coming on in relief and logging 1.2 scoreless innings. Dan Walker collected the save for the Cougars, his first of the season.
Following today's game, the Cavs move to 5-8 overall. They will look to get back in the win column on Saturday, March 14th when they host Elmira College for a double dip beginning at 12pm.
