Women's Basketball Crowned ECAC Champions Following 75-43 Victory Over Drew

RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team capped their 2019-20 campaign in style this afternoon as they claimed the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship with a 75-43 victory over Drew University.

The Blue and White led by just six at the intermission, but would go on to outscore the Rangers 23-12 in the third and 22-7 in the fourth for the comfortable victory.

The offense was paced by senior Meghan Matthews who also took home tournament MVP honors. The veteran nearly posted a triple double as she finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, while also adding a game high four blocks.

Junior Ashley Tutzauer paired a team high 20 points and added seven rebounds, while classmate Kate Lannon finished with 17 points. The duo was named to the ECAC All-Tournament team for their efforts. Junior Lexi Edwards added 15 points and six rebounds to round out the Cavaliers in double figures.

Cabrini jumped out to a 9-2 lead through the first five minutes of the game as Matthews, Tutzauer, Lannon and Edwards each found the bottom of the net. They would push their lead to 13-4 following a pair of free throws from Matthews, but a 5-0 spurt from the Rangers trimmed their deficit back to four points. Back-to-back jumpers from Lannon and Matthews, including a pair of free throws from the latter, handed the Cavs a 19-9 lead heading into the second quarter.

After the Blue and White extended their lead to 11 points with 2:45 left in the half, Drew answered with a 7-0 run, highlighted by a triple from Julia Ramos. A late layup from Lannon put the Cavs up 30-24 at the intermission.

The Cavalier offense caught fire out of the break as they used a 17-4 run to bust the game open and seize control. A transition three from Tutzauer served as the dagger as the Cavs cushion wouldn't reach single digits the rest of the way.

As a team, the Cavs shot 45 percent from the field in the second half, while finishing 15-17 from the line. Defensively, Cabrini limited Drew to just two field goals in the fourth quarter and 19 percent from the field in the second half.

The Rangers were led by Joey Meyers and Julia Ramos. The pair combined for 25 of the Rangers' 43 points. Meyers also tallied a game team high eight rebounds and six steals.

As mentioned, following this afternoon's contest the Cavaliers cap their season with a 22-8 overall record, including a 10-2 mark in league play, and as ECAC Tournament Champions.
