Cavs Unable to Get Past No. 5 Christopher Newport in Opening Round of NCAA Tournament

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The Cabrini University women's soccer team held their own with the No. 5 ranked Christopher Newport Captains in this afternoons NCAA opening round game, but ultimately saw their upset bid fall short as the hosting Captains escaped with a 2-0 victory.

Graduate student keeper Ashley Tutzauer had a season high 10 saves as she anchored the Cabrini defense with the second highest number of saves in her career. The Toms River, NJ native faced a total of 26 shots, including 16 shots on frame, from a relentless Christopher Newport attack.

An early shot from CNU's Riley Cook, assisted by Sarah Rhiel, 51 seconds into the first half gave the home team the early advantage, however, the Cavs defense backstopped by Tutzauer and fellow team captains Brianna Blair and Ally Wojton kept it a one-goal game through the remaining 44 minutes of the first half despite the Captains peppering 14 additional shots towards the Cavs goal, 1-0.
Christoper Newports' Sarah Smith, with the help of Nyah Savage, added the insurance goal in the 51st minute of play.

Holding a 2-0 lead with 39 minutes to play, the Captains transitioned to a more defensive game plan as they held Cabrini without a shot over the remainder of the game to earn the aforementioned 2-0 win.

Christopher Newports' Cook paced the Captains with eight shots, including what turned out to be the game winner, while also adding to her team high of 18 goals on the year.

Following today's action, Cabrini closed their season with a 10-6-4 overall record, while CNU improved to 17-0-1. The Captains will advance to Sunday's second round game where they'll No. 5 ranked Franklin & Marshall.
