RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini University women's basketball team returned home and snapped its four game skid and improved to 3-5 overall, as the Cavaliers defeated Ursinus College 43-38.
The Cavs 43 points were the fewest in a victory since a 48-46 victory over Centenary in opening round of the Colonial State Athletic Conference (CSAC) tournament back in 2017. Cabrini also held a team under 40 points in a game for the first time since a 77-38 victory at Clarks Summit in 2018.
Graduate Student
Ashley Tutzauer led all scorers with a season-high 24 point, with 21 points coming in the second half. Freshman
Giana Rullo finished second on the team in scoring and set a new career high with nine points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field.
Katie Rodriguez led the way defensively with a game high nine boards and one block.
Cabrini got off to a slow start, scoring just nine first quarter points. The Cavs scored six of the final seven points of the period, highlighted by a
Leila Collazo trey to take a 9-7 lead into the second quarter.
The offensive struggles continued into the second as the Blue and White went 3-for-12 from the field. The Bears regained the lead at the 7:35 mark on an Alison Lisanti three pointer and did not relinquish the lead through the remainder of the first half, as they took a 21-19 advantage into the break.
Tutzauer opened the scoring in the second half with her second of a season high five three pointers but the Bears outscored the Cavs five to four over the first two plus minutes to maintain a one point lead, 25-24. Cabrini did not let-up as the home team went on a 10-3 run, with six points from Tutzauer, to take a 34-28 lead into the final quarter.
The Bears clawed their way back within in three points of a tie game, 38-35. Chinwe Irondi scored seven of her team high 15 points in the final frame for Ursinus but it was all Tutzauer over the final three minutes of regulation. The graduate student hit a three, pulled up for two and capped the game with a pair from the charity line for the 48-38 victory. Tutzauer is now 33 points away from 1K.
Cabrini will return to the hardwood next Monday when the Cavaliers visit DeSales University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5pm.
