SCRANTON, PA – Despite trailing by five points with 2:27 to play, the Cabrini men's basketball team had a shot to tie at the buzzer, but the shot was off target, sending the Cavaliers to a 66-64 loss at Marywood. The loss ends the Blue and White's pandemic-shortened season with an 0-2 mark.
Junior
Christian Lane led the Cavaliers with 20 points, six assists and four steals, while sophomore
Joshua Jones added 13 points. Junior
Ryan Byars secured a game-high seven rebounds, while freshman
Aquil Stewart matched Lane with six dimes.
Neither team could seize control of the game a first half that features 10 ties and 10 lead changes. The Pacers led by as many as seven and the Cavaliers five, but a late Lane jumper pulled Cabrini to within37-36 at the half.
The Blue and White shot just south of .500 from the floor in the first half, but struggled from three point range, connecting on just three of its 16 attempts. While Cabrini scored 10 second chance points and 20 points in the paint, the Pacers maintained their halftime lead on the strength of 19 bench points.
The second half proved to be tighter than the first, including 10 ties and 20 lead changes. Neither team led by more than four points until Marywood freshman Robert Van Brunt hit a triple ot give he Pacers a 66-61 lead with 2:27 to play.
The Cavaliers had several chances to cut into their deficit, but a turnover and back to back misses kept the home team's lead at five points entering the game's final minute.
A Cabrini foul sent Marywood to the line for a one and one with 47 seconds to play, but the Pacers missed the front end. The Cavaliers had a shot attempt blocked but retained the ball our of bounds. Stewart took advantage of the second chance, draining a three to pull the visitors to within 66-64 with 32 seconds to play.
Following timeouts by both teams, another Cabrini foul put Marywood on the free throw line with 15 seconds on the clock. Again, the Pacers failed to convert the front end of the one and one, giving the Cavaliers one final shot. Cabrini's final attempt missed the mark at the final buzzer.
Freshman Trevor Seitz led Marywood (1-0) with 18 points off the bench, while sophomore Jason Holman and freshman Corey Perkins added 11 points each.
