Softball Tops Marywood to Advance to Championship Series

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini softball team advanced to the Atlantic East Conference Championship Series today, after closing pod play with a 6-1 victory over Marywood at Cabrini Field

The tournament's number two seeded Cavaliers improved to 17-6 on the season and will visit top seed Wesley (22-5) next weekend for a best of three series for the conference title.

After scoring wins over Gwynedd Mercy and Marywood in Friday's round robin, the Cavaliers just needed to defeat Marywood once today to advance to next weekend's series.

Cabrini wasted little time seizing control of today's action, as freshman Madison Gugel smashed a two run homer in the bottom of the first to give the home team a 2-0 lead after just two batters.

The Blue and White added to its lead in the bottom of the second. Junior Casey Scheuren opened the frame with a walk before scoring on a two out single by classmate Angel Cintron. Then Gugel made her presence felt again, as the rookie hit a two RBI double, plating Cintron and freshman Kelsey Huling.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Martin put an end to the Cavaliers' scoring in the fifth with a solo home run, her second of the season.

The six runs were more than enough for freshman pitcher Avery Byrnes, who improved to 9-2 on the season with today's win. The rookie held the Pacers to just one earned run on four hits, while recording eight strike outs.

Sophomore Kadirah Williams joined Cintron, Gugel and Martin with two hits each.

Wesley secured its place in next weekend's championship series with a 10-1 win over Immaculata, the Wolverines' 17th consecutive win. Ariana Mirenda went 4-4 with a double and home run, two RBI and three runs scored to lead the club, while Bianca Newsom drove in three runs with her two base knocks.

Hurler Dori Loukopoulos continued her dominance in the pitcher's circle, as she allowed just one earned run on five hits with five punch outs, improving to 13-2 on the season.
