WATERVILLE, ME – The Cabrini women's lacrosse season came to an end today, as the Cavaliers suffered a 23-7 loss to No. 3 Tufts at Colby College in the second round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
The loss snapped the Blue and White's eight game win streak, one that included the program's 19th conference championship, and closed the campaign with an 8-3 overall record, including 6-0 in Atlantic East Conference play.
Sophomores
Dana Carlson and
Olivia Little led the Cavaliers with four points each. Carlson posted four markers, while Little paired two goals, two assists and a game high six draw controls.
Fellow sophomore
Sam Hamalak recorded 12 saves and four ground balls on the day, while juniors
Taylor Dimmerling and
Ashley Tutzauer joined Little with two caused turnovers each.
Trailing 2-0, Carlson put the Blue and White on the board at the 22:55 mark, converting a Dimmerling feed. The Jumbos responded with two more goals, but Cabrini had an answer.
Little posted an unassisted tally before sophomore
Kelly Sweeney found Carlson to pull the Cavaliers to within 4-3 with just under 13 minutes to play until the half.
The Cavaliers then saw their offense go cold, and the Jumbos took full advantage, scoring six unanswered goals to take a 10-3 lead into the halftime break.
Carlson opened the second stanza with a pair of early goals, but again Tufts turned their stingy defense to regain control of the game. Cabrini went scoreless over the next 21 minutes, as the Jumbos offensive attack pulled away to seal the game.
Catherine Lawliss and Kathryn Delaney scored five goals each for the Jumbos (7-0), who will face Roger Williams on Saturday in the tournament's third round.
