Tutzauer Eclipses the 1K Point Plateau but Cavs Fall to Saints

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini University women's basketball team traveled to Arlington, VA to face Atlantic East Conference (AEC) foe Marymont University but came up short in a 53-48 setback.

Graduate student Ashley Tutzauer eclipsed the 1,000 career-point plateau as she led the way offensively for the Blue and White with a team high 16 points. Freshman Giana Rullo finished second in team scoring with a career high 11 points, while adding asix rebounds. Katie Rodriguez matched her career mark with a game high 14 boards and added five points, and three assists.

The Cavaliers made just over 28 percent of their field goal attempts in the opening 10-minute period but made seven of eight from the charity line to keep pace with the Saints who committed seven fouls in the opening frame. The Cabrini defense limited Marymount to 5-13 from the field and caused five turnovers as the quarter ended in a tie, 15-15.

The Cavaliers found a bit of rhythm in the second, with a 7-0 run midway through the quarter for their largest lead of the day, 24-17. The run was highlighted by Tutzauer who had five points and sank the team's first three pointer of the day, which was assisted by junior Miranda Liebtag. The Saints went 2-17 from the field and missed all three of their shots from beyond the arc as the Cavaliers held a 26-22 advantage on the scoreboard headed into the break.

Marymount managed to tie the score in the opening minutes of the third but a Tutzauer jumped inside the arc put the Cavaliers ahead 28-26 with six minutes to go in the third. The following four minutes of play would result in five different lead changes but the Saints ended the third on a 7-2 run to take a 40-35 lead into the final quarter.

Within the first five minutes of the final quarter Marymount increased its lead to eight points, its largest lead of the night, 45-37. Cabrini mounted a comeback effort late in the game with a six point run to make it 47-45 with 46 seconds remaining on the clock. Marymount called a 30 second timeout and responded with a made jumped inside the paint on the ensuing play followed by two made free throws to increase its lead to 51-45 with ten seconds to play. Just two seconds later Tutzauer hit her second trey of the day to bring the Cavs within one shot of a tie game, 51-48, but a foul with four seconds remaining put an end to the comeback effort as the Saints finished the game with two additional points from charity line for the 53-48 final.

Marymount made 19 of its 22 free throw attempts on the day, 86.4 percent. The Saints were led by Terra Dzambo and Symantha Shackelford who finished the game with 18 and 17 points respectively. Claire Smith also made it to the double-digit figure with 10 points for Marymount.

The Cavaliers, (4-9, 0-2 AEC), have little time to regroup, as they host the Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins this upcoming Monday. Tipoff is slated for 6pm at Nerney Field House.
