Women's Basketball Outpaces Marywood for Third Consecutive Victory

Big second half propels Cavs to third win in a row.

RADNOR PA – The Cabrini University women's basketball team outpaced the Marywood University Pacers for a 72-44 Atlantic East Conference home victory this afternoon.

Two Cavaliers scored in double figures today, led by junior Miranda Liebtag's game high 15 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double. Liebtag rounded out the day with three assists, three steals and a block.

Graduate student Ashley Tutzauer finished second in team scoring with 11 points and three boards in 24 minutes of play. On the opposite end of the court, Katie Rodriguez had six rebounds four blocks and a steal.

The Blue and White began the game with a quick basket from Liebtag on their opening possession but the Pacers responded with seven of the next nine to take an early 7-4 advantage, which would stand as their last lead. In a span of 34-seconds midway through the quarter the teams combined for three three-points as Tutzauer tied the game at seven and then again at 10 with four minutes remaining in opening frame. A Rullo layup followed by a Leila Collazo shot from beyond the arc put the Cavs ahead for good and the Cavs closed out the quarter ahead by one, 15-14.

Cabrini would stay hot to start the second stanza as they opened the new frame with an 9-4 run, highlighted by a Brielle Fitzpatrick three pointer, to push their lead to six points at 24-18. Marywood outscored the Cavs 5-4 over the next two minutes of play but Dani Tyrell made a driving layup and Liebtag hit a three-point basket to go into the break ahead by double digits, 33-23.

The Blue and White opened the second half with an 11-0 run, sparked by a Tutzauer three and assisted by Abby Paolini. Paolini finished the day with a game and career high six assists, 44-23. Savannah Purdy interrupted the run with a layup and one for the visitors but Cabrini closed out the third with nine of the final 11 points to put the game out of reach, 53-28.

The Pacers went on an 8-2 run midway through the final frame to pull within 20 points but that would be as close as it would get as the home team's defense silenced the visitors overs the final 5:51 seconds of regulation. The Cavs closed the game on an 8-0 run for the aforesaid 72-44 victory.

The Cavalier defense proved the difference as they held an 8-1 advantage in blocked shots and 37-24 advantage in defensive rebounds. The Pacers were limited to just .25 shooting from the field, including 1-for-16 in the third quarter.

Marywood's Purdy paced the visitors with 12 points, while Wyers added nine points.

Following tonight's game, the Cavs improve to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in Atlantic East Conference play. Cabrini will look to stay continue its win streak as the team travels to Neumann University this upcoming Monday, January 24th. Tipoff is scheduled for 2PM.
