WASHINGTON, DC - The Diamond Cavs split today's double header against the Catholic University Cardinals as they lost game one by a 6-1 final, but took a convincing 7-2 victory in game two.
Game One: Catholic 6, Cabrini 1
In game one, senior Jonathan Baked toed the rubber for the Blue and White and turned in a strong performance, despite ultimately being saddled with the loss. The rookie allowed three earned and five hits in five innings of work, while striking out six and walking one. Senior
Joey Moyer pitched the final inning for the Cavaliers.
Catholic's Alch Tucker collected the victory as he managed to keep the Cavaliers' offense at bay. Tucker allowed six hits in seven innings, while tallying eleven punchouts over the course of seven innings.
Offensively, freshman
Keegan Miller went 1-for-1 from the plate and scored the Cavs' lone run in the top of the seventh. Senior Mac McKisson led the team in hits with two in four at bats.
Cathoic's Jesse Lacefield paced the hosts, courtesy of game highs of two runs, two RBI's and two hits including a home run.
Game Two: Cabrini 7, Catholic 2
The backend of the day's double dip was highlighted by McKisson's first win the season on the mound. The veteran tossed a stellar four innings as he allowed just two hits and one run, while striking out seven.
Fellow seniors
Garrett Laraia and
Dustin Sutton led the way offensively as Laraia hit his first home run of the season for two RBIs and added his first stolen base of the year. Sutton finished the day with a game high three RBIs, one run, and went 2-for-3 from the plate including a triple.
After a scoreless first, the Cavaliers broke through with a two run second inning. Sutton's aforementioned triple highlighted the inning and broke open the scoreless game as the Cavs led 2-0 after two innings of play.
Catholic narrowed the lead to just one in the bottom of the fourth but five runs over the next two innings busted the game open in favor of the Blue and White as the Cavs stormed to a 7-1 lead. As mentioned, Laraia delivered the big blow with a two run homer to cap the scoring in the sixth. Cabrini would limit the home team to just one run over the final three innings of play to walk away with the aforementioned 7-2 victory.
Following today's games, the Cavaliers remain at .500 with a 2-2 overall record. They will travel to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Monday, February 28, as they open up their Spring Training trip with a double header versus Eastern University. First pitch is slated for 12PM.
