Men's Basketball Season Ends with OT Tourney Loss

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini men's basketball season came to a disappointing end tonight, as the Cavaliers suffered an 89-86 overtime loss to Immaculata in the opening round of the Atlantic East Tournament.

The loss caps the Blue and White's season at 9-15 and closes the book on its five seniors Ryan Byars, Pat Costa, Brendon Fisher, Brice Parks and Billy Warren, along with manager Hannah Burke.

Sophomore Aquil Stewart led the Cavaliers with 27 points, seven assists and four steals, while playing all 45 minutes. Byars and Parks scored 20 points each, a season high for Parks, and secured five rebounds each.

Warren added his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 boards, while sophomore Josh Jones grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

Despite trailing in the opening minutes, the Cavaliers used an 11-2 run to grab a six point lead at the 11:59 mark of the first half. The home team extended it lea to 31-19 when Byars found freshman Jaden Dickerson for a triple with 5:28 left in the opening stanza.

The Blue and White shot a solid .531 from the field in the opening 20 minutes and carried a 39-32 lead into the halftime break.

Cabrini's hot shooting continued into the second half, as the Cavaliers used a 13-2 run to extend their lead to 60-43 with 12:42 to play. The run was sparked by Parks, Byars and Stewart who drained threes on three consecutive offensive possessions.

The Mighty Macs slowly chipped away at their deficit, pulling to within 68-64 with 7:29 to play.

Minutes later, a Parks triple pushed Cabrini's lead back to seven points, but the visitors would not go away. An Asa Kitchen bucket pulled Immaculata to within 73-72 with 3:31 to play, but Parks answered with four straight points of his own.

Back to back triples by Immaculata freshman Dylan Crews sandwiched a Warren lay-up , as the Cavaliers clung to a one point lead with 1:50 to play.

After empty possessions by both teams, Stewart split a pair of free throws for a two point lead with just under a minute to play. Immaculata had a chance to tie the score, but Crews misses a pair of free throws.

The Cavaliers could not take advantage of the chance to extend their lead missing three on the ensuing possession. As the ball headed to the Immaculata side of the floor, a Cabrini foul sent Crews back to the line. This time the rookie was on point, leveling the score with 27 seconds to play.

The Blue and White had one final possession in regulation, but a pair of jumpers missed the mark, sending the game to overtime.

It took the Mighty Macs just six seconds into the extra period to grab a lead, as sophomore Steven Dao's converted two free throws to give the visitors their first lead since 8-7.

Immaculata pushed its lead to 86-82 midway through the overtime, but a Warren lay-up was followed by a Byars hoop and a harm, leveling the score a 86 with 90 seconds to play. Byars missed the free throw attempt but Warren secured the board before a Cabrini turnover game Immaculata a chance to regain its lead.

The Mighty Macs took full advantage, as sophomore Gregory Vlassopoulos hit the eventual game-winning jumper with 63 seconds to play.

The Cavaliers' defense created more chances for the offense, but Cabrini failed to convert on its next three possessions. Follow a late Cabrini foul, Crews split a pair of free throws with five seconds on the clock, giving the Cavaliers one final possession, but their game-tying three point attempt missed the mark.

Five Mighty Macs scored in double figures, led by junior Tyler Tillery's 20 points and eight rebounds. Classmate Keith Farmer paired 18 points and eight boards before fouling out.

By virtue of tonight's win, Immaculata advances to Wednesday's semifinal round, where it will visit top seeded Marymount.
