CLERMONT, FL – The Cabrini softball team rallied from a pair of losses on Monday to score a pair of victories today in Clermont, FL. The Cavaliers posted a five inning, 11-3 walkoff win over Finlandia before topping Wartburg 5-0.
The Cavaliers will enjoy a well-deserved day off on Wednesday before facing Mt. Union and North Central on Thursday.
Cabrini 11, Finlandia 3
The Cavaliers sprinted to an early lead and never looked back. Sophomore
Ariana Mirenda opened the bottom of the first with a double, before stealing third and scoring on an error. Classmate
Madison Gugel followed with a single and stolen base, before scoring on a single by senior
Kaitlyn Martin.
The Blue and White bats stayed hot in the second, plating three runs. Sophomore
Emma Barbera reached on a fielder's choice, stole third and scored on a passed ball. Gugel then drove in a pair of runs with a triple to score Mirenda and freshman
Abby Tobelmann.
Cabrini added to its lead in the third, as Mirenda's bases loaded fielder's choice plated senior
Emily Wargo. Gugel's single then scored Mirenda and freshman
Ashley McMenamin to give Cabrini an 8-0 lead.
Finlandia scored three runs in the top of the fourth, but the Cavaliers got the runs back in the bottom of the fifth to end the action.
McMenamin reached on an error and advanced on Tobelmann's single before scoring on a Finlandia error. Freshman
Shauna Stotler than put a bow on the victory, as her double scored Tobelmann and classmate
Holly Smith.
Freshman
Sammi Sisolak earned her first collegiate victory after allowing two hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts over five innings.
Gugel anchored the offense, going 3-4 with four RBI, while Tobelmann went 3-3 with two runs scored.
Cabrini 6, Wartburg 0
The Cavaliers closed the day with an impressive shutout victory over American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) preseason favorite, Wartburg.
Cabrini grabbed an early lead, as Martin scored on a bases loaded wild pitch. The Cavaliers extended the lead in the second, as Tobelmann scored on a bases loaded error. Freshman
Dorian Ilyes then cleared the bases with double, scoring Martin, Gugel and Mirenda.
That was more than enough offense for junior hurler
Avery Byrnes, who shut down one of the best offenses in the country. The junior allowed just a first inning single, while striking our seven in the complete game victory.
Cabrini added an insurance run in the fifth, as Barbera's single scored Wargo.
Mirenda accounted for two of Cabrini's six hits in the game, while Ilyes drove in three runs.
