ARLINGTON, VA – The Cabrini softball team opened Atlantic East Conference play with a split at Marymount University. The Cavaliers held on for a 4-3 extra inning victory in the opener, before falling 8-0 in the night cap.
The Blue and White is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, when it makes its 2022 home debut with a visit from the Swarthmore Garnet. First pitch is scheduled for 3pm at Cabrini Field.
Game 1: Cabrini 4, Marymount 3 (8 innings)
The Cavaliers grabbed an early lead, as senior
Kaitlyn Martin's double scored sophomore
Ariana Mirenda. Cabrini added to its slim lead in the third, when sophomore
Kelsey Huling's double to right center plated senior
Allison Martin.
The home side began its comeback in the bottom of the fifth with a two out RBI single before taking advantage of a Cabrini error and wild pitch to even the game in the sixth.
Neither squad could muster a base runner in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.
With two outs and runners on second and third, freshman
Shauna Stotler came through with a single up the middle to score
Allison Martin and freshman
Dorian Ilyes.
The Saints responded immediately in the bottom of the eight, opening the frame with a double before adding a run on a sacrifice fly. The comeback looked to continue with a one out single, but junior pitcher
Avery Byrnes shut the door, stranding the game-tying run at first.
Kaitlyn Martin joined Huling and Ilyes with a pair of base knocks in the win, while Byrnes allowed just four hits and struck out 10 Saints in the victory.
Game 2: Marymount 8, Cabrini 0 (6 innings)
The Blue and White could not carry its momentum into game two, recording just two base hits and three baserunners in the loss.
Marymount got all of the offense it needed with a pair of runs in the second inning, before adding three runs in both the fifth and sixth frames.
Mirenda and Stotler tallied the Cabrini hits, while freshman pitcher
Sammi Sisolak surrendered five earned runs on nine hits it 5.2 innings of work. The rookie also matched a season best with six strikeouts.
