CLERMONT, FL – The Cabrini softball team closed its spring trip on a high note, as the Cavaliers shut out Rose-Hulman 8-0 before erupting for six runs in the sixth to top Concordia (MN) 12-4.
With today's win, the Blue and White improve to 7-3 and will come north riding a six game win streak.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday, when they head to Chester, PA to face Widener in a 4pm doubleheader.
Cabrini 8, Rose-Hulman 0
The Cavaliers wasted little time grabbing a lead in the opener, plating two runs in the top of the first. Sophomore
Ariana Mirenda opened the game with a single, before scoring on base knock by senior
Kaitlyn Martin. Three batters later, Martin scored on a single by twin sister
Allison Martin.
The two runs proved to be more than junior pitcher
Avery Byrnes would need, as the junior allowed just five hits with six strikeouts in the complete game victory.
While Byrnes controlled the Fightin' Engineers, the Cabrini offense continued to extend its lead. The Cavaliers added a run in the second, when Mirenda's sacrifice fly scored classmate
Kelsey Huling, and one in the third, as
Kaitlyn Martin scored on a double by senior
Emily Wargo.
An
Allison Martin single plated freshman
Dorian Ilyes in the fifth before the Cavaliers put the game away in the sixth. With runners on second and third and no outs, freshman
Abby Tobelmann's single scored sophomores
Emma Barbera and
Sam Kilson. The rookie then scored the game's final run on a Mirenda sacrifice bunt.
Each of the Martin sisters recorded two hits in the win, with Allison joining Mirenda with a pair of RBI.
Cabrini 12, Concordia (MN) 4
The Cavaliers loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first and made the Cobbers pay.
Allison Martin and Wargo drew RBI walks before freshman
Shauna Stotler's RBI fielder's choice put Cabrini ahead 3-0 after the first inning.
Concordia got a run back in the top of the second, but the Cavaliers answered with two more in the bottom half. A Huling single scored Mirenda, before
Kaitlyn Martin scored on Concordia error.
Another Huling single drove in
Kaitlyn Martin in the fourth, extending the Cabrini lead to 6-1. The score remained the same until the Cobbers made a comeback in the top of the sixth. Concordia scored three runs on five hits before Byrnes entered the game in relief and shut the door on the Cobbers.
The Blue and White put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with six runs, the club's highest scoring frame in the young season. Mirenda recorded a one out single before scoring on a single by sophomore
Madison Gugel. The sophomore swiped second, third and home before
Kaitlyn Martin scored on a Huling double.
The sophomore then crossed the plate one batter later, as
Allison Martin singled. The senior then scored on a Tobelmann fielder's choice, before Barbera provided the walk-off hit, an RBI double to score Wargo.
Mirenda and Huling went 3-4 in the win, with Mirenda scoring three runs and Hulling driving in three.
Allison Martin added two RBI, while
Kaitlyn Martin score four runs.
Freshman
Sammi Sisolak improved to 3-1 on the season after allowing four earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts over 5.1 innings. Byrnes earned her first save of the campaign with 2/3 of an inning of work.
