GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA – Junior pitcher
Avery Byrnes etched her name in the program history book today, as the junior sparked the Cabrini softball team to a pair of wins at Gwynedd Mercy.
The junior was the story in the opener, as Byrnes recorded a five inning, perfect game in the Blue and White's 8-0 win.
Senior
Emily Wargo and sophomore
Ariana Mirenda tallied three hits each, while freshman
Sammi Sisolak and Byrnes combined to keep the Griffins off balance in the 4-2 win in the nightcap.
The Cavaliers will look to extend their current four game win streak tomorrow, as they welcome the Stockton University Ospreys to Cabrini Field. First pitch is set for 1pm.
Game 1: Cabrini 8, Gwynedd Mercy 0
The Cavaliers grabbed an early lead, as Mirenda opened the game with a single before stealing second and third and scoring on a
Kaitlyn Martin bunt single.
The run proved to be all Byrnes needed, as she struck out the side in the first, a feat she would repeat in the third.
Cabrini added to its lead in the third, as it took advantage of a Griffins' error to plate a pair of runs on only a single by sophomore
Emma Barbera.
The Blue and white offense put the game away in the top of the fourth. Cabrini loaded the bases with one out before RBI singles by sophomore
Madison Gugel, Martin and freshman
Shauna Stotler pushed the lead to 8-0.
While the offense kept the Cavaliers in the lead, Byrnes continue to dominate the Gwynedd Mercy line-up. The junior face the minimum 15 batters, striking out 11, her fifth outing this season with double figure strikeouts. A model of efficiency, Byrnes completed the perfect game with just 48 pitches.
Game 2: Cabrini 4, Gwynedd Mercy 2
Cabrini grabbed an early lead in the nightcap, as Gugel drove in Mirenda for a 1-0 lead in the third. The Cavaliers added to their lead in the fourth. Sophomore
Kelsey Huling's fielder's choice scored Stotler. The sophomore then crossed the plate on a Barbera double.
Sisolak made the most of her lead, as the freshman pitcher surrendered just four singles through five innings.
The Cavaliers added an insurance run in the top of the sixth, as Wargo opened the frame with a double before scoring on a deep foul ball by classmate
Allison Martin.
The Griffins finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth, as Gwynedd Mercy mounted a two out rally. Three consecutive singles led to a pair of runs, pulling the home team to within 4-2. Byrnes then entered the game in relief, stopping the Gwynedd rally.
After failing to extend the lead in the top of the seventh, the task fell to Byrnes to seal the victory. The Griffins loaded the bases with no outs, but Byrnes struck out two Griffins before ending the game with a lineout to Barbera.
Mirenda and Wargo combined for six of the Cavaliers' 10 hits in the win. Sisolak improved to 6-3 on the season after allowing two earned runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings, while Byrnes collected her second save of the campaign.
