RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini University baseball erupted for 10 runs in the eighth inning to cruise to a comfortable 13-4 Atlantic Easter Conference victory over the visiting Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins.
With the game tied at three apiece, the Cavaliers put up 10 runs on six hits, including four homeruns, in the bottom of the eighth.
Sophomore
Pat Toal and senior
Garrett Laraia led the way offensively as each had three hits and two RBI. Laraia also had two runs, including a solo homerun, while Toal finished the day with one run.
Graduate student,
Steven Priest finished the day with two hits, including a two-RBI homer and two runs.
Seniors
Mack McKisson and
Gil Peralta, sophomores
Zack Brook and
Christian Strickland, as well as freshman
Sean Glatts each marked the hit column once, including Brook's three-RBI four-bagger.
Freshman
Brian Dino toed the rubber for the Cavs and allowed three hit and two unearned runs with eight strikeouts across 4.0 innings of work. Sophomore
Dom Marotta, who came on in relief of Dino, collected his second victory of the season with, allowing three hits, with three strikeouts in five innings on the mound.
After a scoreless first, the Diamond Cavs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. With a runner already on first, Toal reached on a base hit to right field and advanced to second, on a Griffins double play at third and first. However, all toll roads lead to home, as Laraia plated the sophomore with a deep single to left field, 1-0.
Gwynedd Mercy responded with two runs on one hit and an error in the top of the third to take the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the innings, however, a pair of walks and an RBI single down the left field line by Peralta tied the game once again, 2-2.
The Blue and White regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Brook reached on a walk and advanced to third on a Laraia single. A perfectly placed bunt by Glatts allowed Brook to make it home, 3-2.
The 3-2 advantage would stand until the Griffins tied the game at three apiece on two hits in the top of eighth.
With no outs, the Cavaliers loaded the bases on a pair of back-to-back walks followed by a hit by pitch to begin a dominant eighth inning. Toal seized the moment and hit what turned out to be the decisive run with a two-RBI single to center field, 5-3. With runners on first and second Brook cleaned up with his aforementioned three-RBI dinger, 8-3. Laraia followed Brook with a solo shot that went yard, 9-3.
Later on in the eighth, with one out on the board and a runner on first, McKisson hit a two-RBI bomb, the Cavs third homerun of the inning, to make it 11-3. Sutton followed McKisison as he worked his second walk of the inning to set the stage for the Cavaliers forth home run by Priest, 13-3.
The Griffins managed on run in the final inning but the damage was already done as the Cavaliers walked away with the previously mentioned , 13-4 victory.
On the mound for the Griffins, Cooper Root was stuck with the loss after allowing eight runs runs, all earned, in 1.2 innings of work as he came on in relief of starter Bill Collins.
Following today's game the Diamond Cavs improve to 25-8 overall and 9-4 in conference play. They'll wrap up their home-and-home with Gwynedd Mercy Saturady, April 30
th, when travel to Gwynedd Valley, PA. Game one of th double header is slated to begin at 12PM.
