RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini softball team secured its place in next weekend's Atlantic East conference Championship Series with today's 5-0 win over the Marymount University Saints.
The Cavaliers will make their second consecutive trip to the league final, where it will face top seeded Marywood University. Game one of the three game set is scheduled for Friday, with games two and three slated for Saturday in Scranton, PA.
In the tournament's double elimination format, the Blue and White needed just one win today to advance in the tournament, while the Saints had the pressure of trying to defeat the Cavaliers twice.
The Cavaliers struck first in the top of the third, taking advantage of a pair of Marymount errors. Two errors sandwiched a walk to load the bases with one out. Freshman
Dorian Ilyes struck out, but a wild pitch allowed fellow rookie
Shauna Stotler to score the game's first run. Freshman
Abby Tobelmann then stepped to the plate, singling to left field to score sophomore
Emma Barbera and senior
Allison Martin.
Once again, with Cabrini's ace
Avery Byrnes in the pitcher's circle, the club's three were mor than enough for the junior pitcher. Less than 24 hours after no hitting the Saints in Friday's opener, Byrnes was back on her game, allowing just one hit and one walk over seven innings with seven strikeouts.
While Byrnes kept the Saints off the base paths, the Cavaliers extended their lead in the fourth. Martin reached on another Marymount error, before advancing on a Barbera single and Ilyes sacrifice bunt. The senior then crossed the plate on a wild pitch, pushing the lead to 4-0.
While Marymount finally got a base runner in the bottom of the fifth, the runner failed to advance to second.
The Saints' fourth error paid dividends for the Cavaliers in the top of the sixth. Ilyes reached with a one out single and advanced to second don a wild pitch. Tobelmann's sacrifice bunt went awry for the visitors, as Marymount's Shanyn Burch fielded the bunt but threw wide of first base, allowing Ilyes to score from second.
Byrnes' bid for a second consecutive no hitter went away with a sixth inning single, but a strikeout and unassisted double play by senior
Emily Wargo ended any threat.
The Cavaliers needed just eight hits on the day, with Tobelmann and Wargo recording two each. The sophomore also drove in a pair of runs, while
Allison Martin scored twice.
The Cavaliers will face a tough task in next weekend's championship, as the Pacers sport a 26-7 record, including 11-1 in Atlantic East play, after topping Centenary 9-3 in today's Pod A finale.
Though Cabrini handed the Pacers their only conference loss, a 5-3 Blue and White victory on April 4, the home team scored an unearned run in the eighth inning to claim a 5-4 win in the nightcap. Since then, Marywood has won 14 of 15 ball games.
