Diamond Cavs Unable to Secure Spot in AEC Finals

Shutout by Immaculata and narrow defeat to Marymount ends season for Cavaliers

IMMACULATA, PA - The Cabrini baseball team closed out their 2022 campaign this evening following a pair of losses on the second day in the Atlantic East Conference Tournament.

Game One: Immaculata 6, Cabrini 0
A day after scoring 22 runs the Cavaliers were shutout by No.1 Immaculata University. The only previous time the team was held scoreless was a 2-0 loss to Hanover College during the team's 2019 spring break trip.

Senior Jonathan Baker toed the rubber in game one and tossed 6.1 innings for the Blue and White, surrendering six earned on seven hits, while striking out three, but was saddled with his third loss of the season. Freshman James Mercante closed out the final 1.2 innings for the Cavs and allowed just two hits and no runs.

Mason Keller opposed Baker and collected the win after limiting Cabrini to two hits across 6.1 frames.

Offensively, only four Cavaliers marked the hit column. Seniors Dustin Sutton and Gil Peralta both went 1-3 at the plate. Graduate student Steven Priest and sophomore Pat Toal each went 1-4 from the plate.

After two quick innings the Mighty Macs grabbed a four run lead in the bottom of the third thanks to a three RBI double followed by an RBI single.

The Blue and White responded with a Dustin Single to open up the fourth but a strikeout followed by a double play put an end to the inning for the Cavs. Immaculata tacked of their fifth run of the day in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice bunt, 5-0.

The Mighty Macs hit an RBI single to center field to make it 6-0 in bottom of the seventh and the Cavs were limited to just two hits through eight innings.

With only one out on the board, the Cavaliers loaded the bases in the top of the ninth on a walk and two singles but a 6-4-3 double play put an end to the rally and secured the aforementioned 6-0 win and a spot in tomorrow's AEC Finals.

Game Two: Marymount 10, Cabrini 8
Following the results of game one, the Cavs were forced to play in tonight's elimination game.

Offensively, the Blue and White were led by Brook who went 2-4 from the plate with two RBI and one run scored. Senior Mack McKisson and sophomore Pat Toal also recorded a pair of hits, as each scored a run. McKisson also plated his 50th RBI of the season.

Freshman Brian Dino got the start on the mound and put in 3.1 innings of work, allowing two earned and one hit. Sophomore Dom Marotta relieve Dino in the fourth and was saddled with his second loss of the year as he allowed six earned on six hits. Left fielder Brook took over on the mound for the final 3.1 innings and allowed two earned on four hits.

The Cavs got off to a slow start again in game two, as they were held without a run and only one hit through the first two innings. The Saints broke the scoreless draw with an RBI double to right center in the top of the third, 1-0.

A single through the right side combined with an error  in outfield lead to a 2-0 lead for the Saints in the top of the fourth.

A Zack Brooke two RBI double in the bottom of the frame ended the scoreless drought for the Cavs. Brook advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and gave the Cavs a 3-2 lead thanks to a balk.

Marymount regained the lead with an RBI single in the top of the fifth and added seven runs on six hits in the top of the sixth for a 10-3 advantage.

The Cavs managed three runs in the bottom of the sixth to trim the deficit to just four, highlighted by an RBI double by senior Mack McKisson down the right field line and an RBI single by classmate Gil Peralta through the left side.

Cabrini continued to claw its way back into the game with as freshman Sean Glatts worked a walk, pass ball and throwing error at third into the Cavs seventh run of the day, 10-7.

The Diamond Cavs put themselves in position to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a pair of walks and a wild pitch but following a sacrifice fly out Cabrini's final two batters were struck out swinging to secure the 10-8 victory for the Saints and put an end to the Cavaliers season.

Despite the pair of losses the Cavaliers finished their season with a 31-11 (13-5 AEC) record, matching their most wins in the programs six year history.
