Hot Start leads Cavs to 15-8 Victory Over Cairn University

Cavs score 14 runs through two innings to cost to a non-conference victory

RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini University Diamond Cavs scored 14 runs through the first two innings en route to a non-conference victory at Cabrini Carroll Field over the Cairn University Highlanders by a final score of 15-8.

The Blue and White did not waste any time making a statement sending 14 hitters to the plate in the first inning. Senior Mack McKisson led off the inning with a double to right field. Fellow seniors Dustin Sutton and Gil Peralta worked a walk and an RBI double down the left line, respectively for the Cavs first run of the day. Graduate student Steven Priest followed with a two RBI triple to right field, 3-1

The first was also highlighted by back-to-back doubles by graduate student Earl Kochel IV and McKissons second double of the inning. The Cavs jumped out to an 8-0 start after one, on eight hits and no errors with three left on base.
The Highlanders responded by loading the bases in the top of the second but only managed to get a single run as a 4-6-3 double play followed by a fly out to center ended the top of the second 8-1.

The Cavs continued to cushion their lead in the bottom of the second, adding six runs on seven hits and no errors. The innings was highlighted once again by pair of two-base hits, a two RBI double from Kochel as well as a RBI double from senior Dustin Sutton. Cabrini's 14 runs through two innings of play was their best start to a game in program history.

Cairn outscored the Cabrini three to one over the next four innings of play, the Cavs lone run during the stretch came in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Pat Toal doubled down the right field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Graduate student Brendon Van Belle pinch ran home for Toal on what was nearly a 6-4-3 Cairn double play but fellow sophomore Christian Strikland out ran the throw to first.

Three different Cavaliers finished with multiple hits, led by McKisson who went 3-for-5, including two triples and a double for six RBI's and three runs. Laraia went 2-for-3 from the plate with three runs and four RBI's. Sutton went 2-for-4 and a pair of runs scored.
A three RBI homerun in the top of the seventh gave the Highlanders a bit of hope headed into the final two innings of play, still trailing 15-7.

Cairn, with only one out on the board, loaded the bases in the top of the ninth but a sacrifice fly out followed by a strikeout from freshman closer Jordan Silvestri secured the 15-8 non-conference victory for the Cavaliers.

Starting pitcher, freshman James Mercante put in four innings worth of work, with four hits, three funs, three walks and a strikeout. Hunter Kraiza, Brett Harrelle, Davin Conway, Tommy Roberts and Silvestri combined to pitch the final five innings, led by a perfect inning of hitless baseball from Harrelle.

The Cavaliers finished the day with 17 hits, 15 in the first two innings. McKisson led the charge as he finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate, including his two doubles, three runs and an RBI. Peralta also had three hits (3-5), three RBI, as well as two runs and two stolen bases. Kochel had a game high four RBI, and two runs, on two hits.

Playing second base, senior Jonathan Baker went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs. Sophomore standouts, Pat Toal and Zack Brook finished with two hits apiece. Sutton, Priest, and Joey Moyer rounded out the hit column with one each.

Cabrini will look to stay hot as they head to Hackettstown, NJ this Friday for an Atlantic East Conference tilt with Centenary University Cyclones. First pitch is scheduled for 3PM.
