Radnor, PA - On Saturday afternoon, Cabrini Women's Soccer hosted the Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy in the First Round of the Atlantic East Conference Tournament. For the second time this fall, the two teams played one another to a 0-0 draw.
The Cavaliers' defense has been their calling card this season, as they had the fewest goals against in the Conference. The Cavs held firm again on the afternoon, keeping Gwynedd Mercy scoreless for 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes in overtime, but the Griffins advanced to the AEC Semifinals off a 4-3 decision on penalty kicks.
First Half Action
Grace Langefeld stood out early, making several tackles on the left sideline and creating offensive chances from the corner. One of her endline crosses made its way past GMU's goalkeeper, but defenders sealed the goal frame to prevent Cabrini from scoring off the pass.
Second Half Action
In the closing minutes, Cabrini nearly tilted the game in their favor. As
Amanda Elwell played a right side corner kick,
Rebekah Cunningham met the cross inside the 18 with a one-timer. Cunningham's forceful volley made its way toward Gwynedd's goal, but their keeper just got enough on the ball for it to come off the face of the crossbar.
Overtime
In the postseason format, overtime consists of two 10 minute periods. Midway through the first period,
Amanda Elwell blocked a Gwynedd Mercy clear attempt, redirecting the ball into the air before it landed inside the penalty box. With the opposing goalkeeper now behind the play, A GMU defender tracked back quickly enough to bat the chance away.
Shootout
While
Rylie Butler,
Rebekah Cunningham, and
Sam Terry found the net on their penalty kick tries, the Griffins converted each of their attempts. Gwynedd Mercy won the battle 4-3 with a save in the top of the fifth frame.
Closing Out
With Saturday's match counting as a draw on the schedule, Cabrini Women's Soccer finished their final season with a record of 6-7-3.
