Radnor, PA - On Wednesday evening, Cabrini Women's Soccer faced their first Atlantic East opponent of the season, hosting the Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy University.
The Cavaliers recorded two shots in an early offensive sequence. In the third minute of play,
Gabby Palladino played a long pass ahead to
Amanda Elwell on the right side. The Griffins' goalkeeper read the advantage, sprinting outside the box to impede Elwell and deflect her shot.
Maggie McCay collected the rebound, but her eventual shot was blocked by a defender before it could reach the goal frame.
Another scoring chance came three minutes shy of halftime. It was then that
Paige Bowman played a free kick toward goal. Making an inside run,
Rebekah Cunningham met the free kick with a right foot volley. Gwynedd Mercy's goalkeeper aggressively pounced on Cunningham's try, stopping her shot from six yards out.
Cabrini worked to create scoring more opportunities in the second half. One such chance came from
Erin Speak, who used a nifty inside touch to beat her defender in the attacking half. Speak then played a pass to the right corner, yet the Griffins' defense prevented a cross and prevailed on the play.
The Cavaliers outshot the Griffins 15-6, but were unable to convert on any of their attempts.
Maggie McCay and
Gabby Palladino both placed multiple shots on target in the contest.
In goal,
Caroline Hassall picked up her fourth clean sheet of the season. Hassall made five saves, often moving outside the goal box to halt GMU's offense.
Postgame, Cabrini Coach
Ken Prothero complimented the Griffins' defensive effort. "Hats off to Gwynedd Mercy, they tightened things up to preserve the draw. We had some chances and their keeper made some impressive saves."
Women's Soccer will venture to Arlington, Virginia this Saturday. Their match at Marymount University kicks off at 1 pm.
