IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Cabrini University men's basketball team's 2022-23 season came to end Monday evening as the Cavaliers fell to No. 4-seeded Immaculata University 58-57 on the road at Alumnae Hall.
The No. 5-seeded Cavaliers were hot out of the gate as they went 3-for-3 on their first three shots of the contest, quickly taking a 7-2 advantage. The Cavs continued to lead until the 14:32 mark when the Macs (10-16) went ahead 10-9 on a Gregory Vlassopoulos free throw and took their first lead of the day. Six minutes later a
Ryan Byars trey sparked a 10-1 run over the next two minutes and Cavs took a 23-16 edge with 6:14 left in the half. The Macs cut into the Cabrini lead, but the Cavs held fast and took a 27-23 advantage into the break.
The Cavaliers opened the second half with a bang as sophomores
Aquil Stewart and
Ahmadu Sarnor each hit two threes within the first six minutes and after Sarnor hit his second, Cabrini held a 39-33 lead and had all the momentum. A layup from Stewart pushed the Cabrini lead up to seven, 41-34, with 12:51 remaining, but a 7-0 run by the Macs knotted the contest at 41 apiece with 11:09 left. The contest continued to go back-and-forth as neither team held a lead larger than five points after the 7:35 mark. With 1:00 left, Immaculata went ahead 58-54 on a John Proctor layup, but the Cavs came charging up the floor and Stewart hit a step-back 3-pointer to make it a one-point game with 40 seconds left, but it proved to not be enough time to complete the comeback as the Macs downed the Cavaliers 58-57, ending Cabrini's season.
Stewart led all scorers on the night as he finished with 24 points, going 4-for-9 from beyond the arc. Senior
Ryan Byars tallied 14 points and six rebounds as the only other Cavaliers player in double figure scoring.
Cabrini finished the season with a 10-16 overall record.
