RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini University women's basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the 2023 Atlantic East Conference Tournament on Monday night, as the third-seeded Cavs (13-13) defeated sixth-seeded Marywood (12-13) 80-58.
Cabrini advances to play second-seed Gwynedd Mercy at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night on the road, facing the Griffins for the second time in less than a week. The two split their series during the regular season, with Cavs winning 86-75 at Gwynedd on January 21.
Freshman guard Ella Gordon had a game-high 24 points for the Cavs, going 9-for-13 from the field and 6-of-10 from behind the three-point line. Senior forward Miranda Liebtag chipped in with 14 points and junior guard Abby Paolini banged home 13 for Cabrini.
Marywood got 12 points from Stephanie Klemick and Savannah Purdy, with Faith Hendricks scoring 11 off the bench.
The first quarter was nip and tuck as both traded the lead, before ending the first deadlocked at 15-all. Cabrini started to pull away late in the second quarter as with the score tied at 26-all, the Cavs ended the quarter on a 5-1 run. A jumper from junior forward Kai Williams with 30 seconds left gave Cabrini a 32-27 lead at intermission.
In the third, Cabrini took its biggest lead to date at 41-30 as freshman guard Ava Possenti scored on a layup with 5:05 left. A Gordon three-pointer with 1:13 left gave Cabrini a 52-39 lead and put the game officially out of reach.
This is the first matchup between Gwynedd and Cabrini in the postseason, since Cabrini defeated Gwynedd 93-87 back on February 26, 2020.
