RADNOR, Pa. – Back-to-back Atlantic East Conference champions has a nice ring to it.
The Cabrini University softball team won the 2023 Atlantic East Conference championship as the Cavaliers swept the Marywood University Pacers Friday afternoon, taking Game 1, 8-0 and Game 2, 9-3.
In Game 1, it was all Cavaliers as starter
Avery Byrnes tossed her ninth-career no-hitter, striking out 11 on the day with her only blemishes being one walk and two hit-by-pitches. The bats provided Byrnes with early run support as the Cavs scored seven runs in the first three innings beginning with a
Sydney Andrews RBI-single followed by a two-run double from
Kaitlyn Delaney to put Cabrini up 3-0. The very next inning, Gugel ripped a two-run single up the middle to make it 5-0 followed by a double and a run-scoring error in the third to push the Cabrini lead up to 7-0. In the sixth, Gugel decided six innings was enough as the junior laced an RBI-double to left to win Game 1 and inch the Cavs closer to the championship.
In Game 2, the Cavs picked up where they left off in Game 1 and scored four runs in the top of the second with the big blow coming on a two-run single from
Dorian Ilyes. In the fourth, the Pacers cut the Cabrini lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs, but the Cavs answered with back-to-back RBI-knocks in the fifth to take a 7-2 edge. The Cavs sealed the championship win with two insurance runs in the seventh for their second straight league title.
Byrnes was named the tournament's most valuable player while Delaney earned the Elite 20 Award.
This is the program's seventh conference championship and with the win, the Cavaliers earned their seventh trip to the NCAA tournament.
