RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini University baseball team split its doubleheader with Gwynedd Mercy Saturday afternoon as the Cavaliers took Game 1, 9-3, but fell in Game 2 4-2 at Cabrini Carroll Field.
In Game 1, the Griffins jumped out in front with two first-inning runs and later made it a 3-0 game in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly. In the home half of the third,
Jaden Dickerson socked his 20th double of the year to plate
Dustin Sutton and cut the deficit to 3-1 through three innings.
In the home half of the fourth, back-to-back RBIs from
Brady Campbell and Sutton gave the Cavs a 4-3 lead followed by a Gwynedd Mercy balk to plate Campbell and make it 5-3. The Cavs tacked on four more in the home half of the sixth as an RBI-single from Houghton made it 6-3 with the big blow coming from Campbell who ripped a two-run single to center and put the Cavs up 9-3.
Right hander
Dom Marotta got the win in relief for the Cavs as the junior tossed 2 and 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball and earned his fourth win of the year.
The Griffins struck first again in Game 2 as Gwynedd plated two runs in the top of the second and never relinquished its lead from there on out. Griffins starter Cooper Root held the Cavaliers scoreless through 6 and 2/3 until
Ryan Dipper doubled home
Christian Strickland to make it a 4-1 ballgame. The next inning, Dickerson hit his conference leading 21st double of the year to drive in Sutton and cut Cabrini's deficit in half, but it was not enough as the Cavs fell 4-2.
The Cavaliers locked up the No. 2 seed for the Atlantic East Conference playoffs and will face No. 3-seeded Marymount University on Wednesday, May 10.
