Cavaliers advance to day two of first round AEC Championship action

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini University softball team advanced to the second day of first round action in the Atlantic East Conference Championship tournament as the Cavaliers defeated No. 6-seeded Gwynedd Mercy 8-1 in Game 1 and then topped No. 4-seeded Neumann 9-1 in Game 3 of Pod A on Cabrini Field.

In the first game of the afternoon, the Cavaliers loaded the bases in the bottom of the second for leadoff hitter Ariana Mirenda and she promptly unloaded them with a three-run double to center to give the Cavs a 3-0 lead. The Griffins answered in the fourth with a solo home run from Emma Carney, but Cabrini extended its lead to 8-1 with five runs in the bottom half of the frame with four-straight singles, including a two-run knock from Kaitlyn Delaney

Daphne Santos went the distance in the circle as the freshman scattered six hits and allowed just one run with one walk and nine strikeouts.

In the third game of Pod A, Cabrini fell behind in the top of the first as Taylor Portzline sent an RBI-single up the middle to put Neumann up 1-0. In the bottom of the second, the Cavs put up three runs as Andrews sent a two-run homer to left and Dorian Ilyes plated Delaney with a sacrifice bunt. In the fifth, Madison Gugel pulled a two-run homer to right and in the sixth, the Cavs tacked on four more runs with four straight RBIs to win it 9-1 in six innings.

Avery Byrnes tossed all six innings for Cabrini as the senior allowed just one run on three hits and struck out six Neumann hitters.

Cabrini returns to action on Saturday, May 6 as the Cavaliers take on Gwynedd in the fourth game of first round action in Pod A. First pitch is set for noon.
