Arlington, VA - The Cabrini University Men's Basketball team battled the Saints of Marymount University on Wednesday night. The Cavaliers competed well for much of the game, maintaining a thin lead through the first 25 minutes of play. Cabrini's competitiveness went to no avail, as Marymount found the upswing that outscored the Cavaliers 37-20 to close out the contest.
With the 74-59 victory, Marymount added a tally to their 7-2 home record and kept pace with Gwynedd Mercy atop the Atlantic East standings, each 9-2 in Conference play.
With the setback, Cabrini falls to 7-16 on the season with a 3-7 Conference record. The Cavaliers will have the weekend off before returning to the hardwood Tuesday Feb. 13 against Immaculata.
Cabrini Battles through the Break
After Marymount opened the game with two scores in the paint, Cabrini got on the board with
Eric Neal completing an and-1 fastbreak score. The Cavaliers responded well to the 7 point deficit they faced early, as they'd go on a 15-7 run to take a 20-19 lead just past the midway point in the opening half. During the run,
Isaac Brady knocked down a three,
Aarick Salata,
Donoven Mack, and
Jaden Dickerson scored in the paint, and
Jayden Blakey made a pair of triples. To close out the first half, Mack converted back to back 2s and
Isaac Brady netted a driving layup and three pointer to give him 11 points in the first stanza. The Cavaliers held a one possession lead as late as the 15:38 mark in half number two before turning the game over to the Saints.
Marymount Closes the Door
Marymount continued to get extra possessions and manufacture second chance points with 21 offensive rebounds on the night. The Saints also got timely defensive stops, holding the Cavs to 1-12 shooting from beyond the arc in the second half. Marymount hit their peak offensive stride at the same time the Cavaliers' offense went cold, creating a 15-0 Marymount run.
Eric Neal stopped the bleeding with another and-1 layup, while
Bryan Warren cut into the Saints' lead with more four points of his own. Cabrini couldn't muster enough to overcome the Saints' menacing second-half stretch, as they'd fall by 15. The Cavs were led in the scoring column by
Isaac Brady's 15 points, followed by
Jayden Blakey's 11.
