Softball Silences PSU Brandywine in Game 1, Lions Roar back in Game 2

ROSEMONT, Pa. - The Cabrini University softball team split their Tuesday afternoon doubleheader with Penn State Brandywine. The Cavaliers used pitching, defense, and two timely runs to take game one, before the Lions' offense took over the second matchup. Softball returns to action on Thursday to face Haverford College in a non-conference matchup.

  • Cabrini put up the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning. Ariana Mirenda led off with a single up the middle, followed by a single through the left side from Madison Gugel. Kelsey Huling found a gap in the infield to add the Cavs' third hit of the inning and load the bases. Kaitlyn Delaney's grounder to short scored Mirenda on the 6-3 putout.
  • The Cavaliers added another run in the bottom of the sixth. Kelsey Huling began the frame with a double, as Avery Byrnes bunted her to third. Kaitlyn Delaney delivered a sac fly to right center to score Huling and give Cabrini a 2-0 lead entering the final inning.
  • Avery Byrnes completed a seven inning shutout from the circle. In the top of the first, she worked out of a 2nd and 3rd, 1 out situation, forcing a strikeout and lineout. Byrnes pitched a 1-2-3 second inning with two strikeouts. In the third, PSU was caught stealing third, aiding another scoreless frame. The Lions got one hit in the fourth and fifth inning, but both baserunners were left stranded. Byrnes forced two pop outs and a groundout to retire PSU in order in the sixth. In the final inning, the tying run reached second base with no outs, as Byrnes fanned the next batter, forced a groundout, and caught a popup to close the game. 
  • Cabrini was error free in Game One, a matchup that saw eight different Cavaliers record a putout.
