MADISON, N.J. – The Cabrini field hockey team opened the 2008 season with a 2-1 win at Drew University Saturday afternoon. Freshman forward Lauren Alessi powered the Cavaliers' offense with two goals.
Alessi initiated the game's scoring with her first career tally at the 18:15 mark. Sophomore midfielder Shannon Mulhern was credited with an assist on the goal.
The ensuing 47 minutes played scoreless before Drew's Kati Eggert beat Cabrini goalkeeper Caitlin Donahue with an unassisted goal for the game's equalizer at the 65:46 mark.
Cabrini quickly responded with game-winner off Alessi's stick with less than four minutes remaining. Fellow rookie midfielder Maura Gordon earned the helper.
Drew outshot the Cavaliers, 13-6 and held a commanding 7-0 edge in penalty corners.
Alessi led Cabrini with five shots. Elizabeth Law guided the host's offense, posting a team-best eight shots.
Donahue tallied seven saves, including six in the second frame, for the win.
The Cavaliers return to action Sunday for day two of the Drew University Fall Festival against Swarthmore College at 12 p.m.
