GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Cabrini women's soccer team registered 23 shots against Arcadia University, but dropped a narrow 2-1 decision Saturday afternoon. Senior Brittany Shields scored her first goal of the season for the Cavaliers.
Freshman Kara Hinkelmon powered the Cabrini defense, collected five shots, including three on the Knights' goal. Junior Sabina DeGisi and sophomore Dana Nardello tallied three shots each.
With a strong team defense playing in front of her, sophomore netminder Gianna Porretta posted seven saves.
“We played great team defense today,” said head coach Ken Prothero. “We had a lot of chances, but just could not finish. We hit a couple posts down the stretch. Even after a loss, we are a better team today.”
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Arcadia's Katie O'Malley tallied the game's first goal, an unassisted marker at the 57:23 mark.
Slightly more than five minutes following, the Cavaliers evened the scoring in the 62nd minute. Shield deposited a goal in front off a rebound, knotting the scoring at one apiece.
Jessica Leathem provided the Knights with the game-winner with less than 15 minutes remaining in regulation. Off a deflection in front, Leathem handed the hosts a one-goal edge and the eventual decisive tally.
Arcadia goalkeeper Jennie Groves recorded 14 saves in the victory. The Knights won the corners battle, besting Cabrini, 5-3.
Cabrini (1-3-0) remains on the road, playing its third straight game away from Edith Robb Dixon Field, against Chestnut Hill College Tuesday, September 16 at 4 p.m.
